Jax State overtakes New Mexico State for third straight win

Jacksonville State showed no signs of slowing down in its second game in five days.

The Gamecocks picked up their third straight win and another great offensive performance with a 54-13 win over Conference USA foe New Mexico State on Wednesday, rebounding from an 0-3 start to the season.

The win marks the third straight in which Jax State has scored at least six total touchdowns. The Gamecocks posted a 44-7 win over Southern Miss on Sept. 21 and a 63-24 victory over Kennesaw State, just five days before Wednesday’s victory in Jacksonville.

The win marked the first time Jax State posted back-to-back 50-point victories since 2015, when the team earned two big victories in the FCS playoffs.

“I thought our defense was really outstanding in the first half,” Jax State coach Rich Rodriguez said. “We had some turnovers and on offense we had some plays and made some plays, but we also had a few missed ones and some wide open touchdowns that maybe could have moved the game forward a little earlier, but the guys played hard.”

“They keep trying to get better and better.”

Jax State built a 33-6 halftime lead after running back Tre Stewart scored three touchdowns in the first half alone; He ran twice for 10 and 48 yards while taking a pass from Tyler Huff 32 yards for a touchdown.

The Limestone transfer finished with a season-high 150 total yards and three touchdowns in the win, which now stands at 11 total touchdowns.

Rodriguez was incredibly impressed with how Stewart, who leads CUSA in rushing touchdowns, has improved each game.

“We thought he had a chance to have the biggest lead, maybe even some of the freshmen,” Rodriguez said. “He is an extremely hard worker and has a great feel for what we do. I mean, even catching a touchdown pass is a tough catch. You’re completely open and all these things.

“Him and Tyler Huff are two guys who weren’t here in the spring, who only came here in the summer and basically just had to camp out for work. So I expect them to keep getting better.”

Huff had another strong game for the Gamecocks at quarterback, finishing his night 11-for-18 with 196 passing yards and two touchdowns, while also rushing for 58 yards and a touchdown on the ground; He didn’t play in the fourth quarter.

Jax State also reached the end zone with a 28-yard rushing touchdown from Georgia transfer Andrew Paul, a 5-yard touchdown reception from Brock Rechsteiner and a 72-yard rushing touchdown from quarterback Logan Smothers.

The defense featured 25 different players finishing the game with at least one tackle, with Jawaun Campbell totaling 1.5 tackles for a loss, a forced fumble and a sack forcing a safety.

Four different players had pass breakups, while sophomore Travis Franklin, Jr. capped the defense’s effort with an interception as time expired.

“They work really hard and are starting to understand a little bit better,” Rodriguez said. “I think as the season progresses we will find out, at least I will too, what our guys do best and what we can say in practice. When you come into a game and a quarterback is live and everything is live, I get better: ‘Okay, these are the plays our guys make best.’ We figure that out every week, too.”

Jax State (3-3, 2-0 CUSA) will have a bye week before hosting Middle Tennessee State on Oct. 23.
