England v Pakistan: Harry Brook scores a stunning 317 before hosts collapse on day four of first Test in Multan | Cricket News

Harry Brook achieved England’s fifth-highest Test score of all time as they posted 823-7 before their bowlers reduced Pakistan to 152-6 in the second innings, still trailing by 115 runs at the end of the fourth day of the first Test in Multan.

Brook (317) scored England’s first triple hundred since 1990 – and only their sixth ever – off 322 balls, while he shared a most taxing but brilliant 454-run partnership – their highest – with fellow Yorkshireman Joe Root (262). of all time for England. This surpassed Peter May and Colin Cowdrey’s record of 411, which had stood since 1957.

It was only the fourth Test innings in which a team scored more than 800 runs and the first since Sri Lanka’s Test record of 952-6 against India in 1997.

England then made an immediate impact with the ball, first innings centurion Abdullah Shafique bowling the first ball from Chris Woakes (1-29) before Gus Atkinson (2-28) caught Pakistan captain Shan Masood to make it 11-1.

The hosts had fallen to 41-4 and then 82-6, but Salman Ali Agha (40-0) and Aamer Jamal (24-0) provided much-needed resistance to the batting line-up with an unbeaten partnership of 70 and led their side cautiously to 152 -6 at stumps, 115 runs behind England.

Starting the fourth day with 141, Brook continued to bat elegantly, hitting 29 boundaries and three sixes in a country where he averages 122.

The 25-year-old joined Root at the crease in the perfect display of master and apprentice as he produced his own double century with a gentle single shove down the leg side.

Root achieved his highest score in Test cricket, surpassing the 254 he scored at Old Trafford against the same opposition in 2016 – achievements that were particularly painful for Pakistan as Babar Azam dropped him to 186 at midwicket.

Joe Root continued his brilliant batting performance in England’s first Test series against Pakistan by picking up his sixth double century of his career.

The pair reached England’s 700 mark before Pakistan were finally rewarded for their efforts in the harshest heat with Salman (1-118) dismissing Root for leg in the 137th over.

However, Brook continued in dismissive style, blasting Naseem Shah’s (2-157) first ball for a six over extra cover, scoring more Test runs in Pakistan than he managed in England.

Brook achieved his triple ton virtually with a run-a-ball, achieving his highest score in Test cricket. He appeared to threaten Len Hutton’s England record score of 364 set in 1938.

His innings was completed after he overwhelmed Saim Ayub (2-101) at short fine leg, a relief to Pakistan’s tired bowlers.

Pakistan’s Babar Azam and Saud Shakeel dropped two easy catches as their team struggled against England.

A ball later, Saim was rewarded again when Atkinson (2) picked out Babar at short cover while Jamie Smith (31) was caught in the deep after beating Naseem.

Brydon Carse (9) and Woakes continued to be a thorn in Pakistan’s side, adding an unbeaten 24 in the eighth wicket, taking England past the mighty 800 mark, before Pope declared for an over in the 150th wicket with a lead of 267.

Chris Woakes bowls Abdullah Shafique with the first ball in Pakistan’s second innings in the high-scoring first Test.

The crisis began when Shafique’s off-stump was jarred by a length ball that pushed Woakes back until the first delivery of the innings.

Masood was granted two lives after being dropped on five and seven by Woakes, but the Pakistan captain – who scored 151 in the first innings – was outclassed by a change of pace from Atkinson, who gave Crawley a tame leading edge at mid-wicket played directly.

Babar’s good form continued after he sent Atkinson into safe hands behind Smith.

Saim scored a crucial 25 in the tumultuous innings but was caught at cover by Duckett’s Carse, leaving the hosts 41-4 and on the verge of losing the first Test.

Brydon Carse took England’s fifth wicket and continued to dominate Pakistan.

The few fans at Multan Stadium cheered as Muhammad Rizwan (10) came to the crease, but he lasted only 19 balls after Carse bowled him, sending shockwaves through the batting order.

Saud Shakeel (29) absorbed some of the pressure but was deceived by Jack Leach’s (1-20) quicker shot that narrowly got through to Smith.

Salman and Aamer led Pakistan safely to stumps, played defensively for the valuable seventh wicket and forced England to work hard for their win.
