NEW DELHI: Star batter Harry Brook was incredibly lucky in England’s first Test against Pakistan of the year Multan on Wednesday.
In a moment that left viewers in awe, in Pakistan Aamer Jamal threw a throw to Brook during the 75th over, but the ball rolled back onto his stumps without the bails coming off.
Jamal’s back-of-a-length delivery outside the stump was rejected by Brook as Brook attempted a late attack. The ball deflected from his body and trickled back towards the stumps, but even though it hit them, the bails remained stubbornly in place.
Brook had escaped a potentially game-changing firing.

This moment of joy for Brook was in stark contrast to the outstanding performance of his teammate Joe Root, who stole the show with a majestic hundred.
On a historic day, Root broke Alastair Cook’s record to become England’s top run-scorer Test cricket.
His masterclass innings of 119 not out helped England post a score of 351/3 at tea on the third day.
Root’s day was full of milestones. Earlier in his innings, he surpassed Cook’s total of 12,472 runs with a straight drive against Jamal, a record that had stood since Cook’s retirement in 2018.
Root was confident throughout and reversed to a 35th Test century, making him one of the top six century makers in the game.
While Brook barely survived, he also played his part in England’s dominance.
Undeterred by the near-miss, he delivered a difficult half-century and ended the session unbeaten on 64. Together with Root, the pair put together a 102-run stand and thwarted the Pakistani camp on a flat Multan surface that had little to offer Supporting the bowlers.
