Rangers’ Igor Shesterkin opens signing season in impressive fashion:

PITTSBURGH – The last few days have been all about the numbers for Igor Shesterkin and the Rangers, but on Wednesday night the only number that mattered was zero.

Shesterkin and the Rangers beat the Penguins 6-0 in their season opener Wednesday night at PPG Paints Arena, with the Russian star goaltender making 29 saves in the first game of his official contract season.

As expected, Shesterkin had no interest in commenting on the eight-year, $88 million deal he turned down before the premiere — or anything else about his contract situation.

“I don’t want to talk about my contract,” he said. “If you want, we can talk about our team. We played a really good game today. If you have any further questions we can talk about (rookie Victor) Mancini, (Alexis Lafreniere’s) goal and anything you want.”

The Rangers needed Shesterkin to hold steady during a mini-siege in the first frame, where he had to make 10 saves to keep the Penguins off the field.

“It’s good, there’s definitely things we can look at,” head coach Peter Laviolette said of Shesterkin’s play in the first 20 minutes. “There are areas where we can improve, but he was there. He seemed to see it really well and be in full control of the game.”

Mancini learned from president and general manager Chris Drury on Monday afternoon that he would be releasing the team from training camp.

This was followed by a conversation with Laviolette, who praised the 22-year-old’s work this pre-season.

Bing, bang, boom – and Mancini did his rookie lap on the ice at PPG Paints Arena before making his NHL debut in the Rangers lineup on Wednesday night.

“I couldn’t wipe the smile off my face,” Mancini said when he found out he made the team. “Of course you’ve been working towards this since you were a little child. I’m very happy to be here, but you know this is just the beginning. You want this to be just the beginning.”

Ryan Lindgren, who was placed on injured reserve with an upper-body injury, participated in Wednesday’s morning skate wearing a green non-contact jersey and a full face shield.

“It’s opening night. If someone can practice with us, we want them to practice with us instead of staying,” Laviolette said. “It’s great to have him out there. It brings him back to the feeling of practice. This is the beginning of the process of returning.”

Although Jimmy Vesey was on long-term injured reserve, he also accompanied the Rangers to Pittsburgh.

There were no surprises on the power play units on opening night.

The first group consisted of Adam Fox, Chris Kreider, Mika Zibanejad, Artemi Panarin and Vincent Trocheck, while the second group consisted of K’Andre Miller, Reilly Smith, Kaapo Kakko, Alexis Lafreniere and Filip Chytil.

While Wednesday night’s power play ended 0-2, the Rangers’ penalty kill prevented all three of the Pittsburgh Steelers’ man-advantage chances.
