The Warriors made a splash with 28 3-pointers in the preseason win

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – The Golden State Warriors are looking to maintain their identity with a fast-paced offense and 3-point shooting.

Coach Steve Kerr is still looking for the best combinations with a new group of players and believes the focus must be on scoring high and playing in transition. Wednesday night’s 122-112 preseason win over the Sacramento Kings was the proof Kerr was looking for.

The Warriors made 28 of their 52 3-point attempts, the most the team has ever made in a game.

When Jonathan Kuminga learned of the statistic, he had a surprised expression on his face and said, “Really?” Golden State’s regular-season 3-point record is 27 and has already been equaled twice.

“I think almost all of them were good shots,” Kerr said of the Warriors’ performance on Wednesday.

Kerr doesn’t have a projected number of 3s he wants his team to shoot, but he has said he would like to see Kuminga attempt several good 3s per game and for Andrew Wiggins to shoot six to seven. He also named Brandin Podziemski, Moses Moody and De’Anthony Melton as players he would like to sign more often.

With shooting depth, the Warriors want to make up for the gap left by Klay Thompson. Thompson attempted nine 3-pointers per game last season. The consensus is that no single player will be able to compensate for this, so they want an all-hands-on-deck approach.

“What I like about this team is that despite losing Klay, we have more shooting depth,” Kerr said. “We have more people who can step in from one evening to the next and make threes. That will definitely be a big part of our team.”

Against the Kings, Buddy Hield shot 6 of 7 from 3, and after the game he said his shooting could get even better as he shakes off offseason rust and gets better acclimated to his new team.

Kuminga went 4 of 7. Melton also scored four goals, Stephen Curry and Lindy Waters III each had three goals and Podziemski, Green and Moody had two goals.

“Steve actually encourages it,” Podziemski said. “That’s what we focused on in camp. It was transitioning both ways and shooting threes. … We have the staff to do it. It’s a little different that we have more people besides Steph and Klay who can shoot the three.”

Podziemski led the team in assists with eight. His connectivity was evident in the preseason as the Warriors had to adjust to the loss of Chris Paul as the backup point guard.

As the Warriors continue to try to push the tempo, they will rely on him to bridge the starters and second unit whether he comes off the bench or not.

“That’s all I think about – just making the right play,” Podziemski said. “I don’t have to score the ball to hit the ball.”

He continued: “A lot of (our 3s) came from the edge or another pass. When you feel that and when the ball moves, you feel like everyone is in rhythm because everyone is touching it. Even if that’s not the case.” When they shoot, they have to touch the ball.
