Irish couple wanted for fraud in the UK arrested with stolen truck in Ulster County

ULSTER CITY – Two fugitives from Ireland wanted by London police for defrauding their victims of large sums of money were found during a traffic stop by Ulster County Sheriff’s officers last month.

The sheriff’s office reported this week that the case began when officers stopped a Ford F150 pickup truck in the town of Ulster on July 17.

The truck had been reported stolen to Enterprise Rent-a-Car.

During the investigation, the driver was determined to be 35-year-old Kathleen McCarthy of Ireland. She was arrested and charged with fourth-degree criminal possession of stolen property, a felony.

The U.S. Department of Homeland Security contacted the sheriff’s office after learning of McCarthy’s arrest.

The Department of Homeland Security told the sheriff’s office that McCarthy and her husband, Oliver Boswell, 36, also of Ireland, were wanted by police in London. The Department of Homeland Security told the sheriff’s office that McCarthy and Boswell were part of a “transnational criminal organization” and had been wanted by London police since 2018 for defrauding victims of more than £3 million – about $3.8 million.

They were wanted in the UK on 19 counts of money laundering.

Working with the Department of Homeland Security, sheriff’s deputies and detectives helped locate Boswell and identify other members of the criminal organization in Ulster County.

McCarthy and Boswell were taken into custody by officials from U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement and the Office of Deportation, which includes the Department of Homeland Security.

They remain in the custody of this agency until the deportation proceedings are completed in a federal immigration court.
