The Yankees get a taste of the terrible MLB replay rating on Gleyber Torres’ controversial ruling

In Game 1 of the ALDS, the New York Yankees escaped using MLB’s replay review system. Jazz Chisholm, who appeared to have attempted a steal, was declared safe on the field. The Kansas City Royals disputed the call, but it was upheld.

Even though it was a bang-bang game and hard to turn around, one could argue that there was enough evidence to support it. We are objective enough to admit it. The Yankees got lucky thanks to the imperfect way the league handles these situations.

But now we can call the balance sheet balanced. In Game 3 of the ALDS in Kansas City, the Yankees looked to keep the line moving in the third inning. Oswaldo Cabrera was on first base after a walk and Gleyber Torres entered the batter’s box with two outs.

With the score 3-2, Torres fired a ball into right field that went toward no man’s land, right down the right field line. The ball hit the ground and Cabrera was already at third base. But first base umpire Mark Carlson ruled it a foul ball.

The Yankees appealed the ruling, but it was upheld after review. We’re still not sure why. Well, that’s true because, again, it was close enough to not warrant a rollover, but that’s only because the on-field decision was wrong (similar to Chisholm).

Instead, Cabrera returned to first base and Torres eventually flied out to right field. Inning over. Instead of it being an RBI double with Juan Soto coming in to bat, the Yankees had to fight back in the top of the fourth to score their first run of the night.

After Soto led off the fourth, Giancarlo Stanton doubled the gap and scored after Aaron Judge flied out and Austin Wells struck out. A positive turn of events, yes, but a bounce back in the third game could have really changed the face of this game.

Okay, royals, we’re even in rerun controversy. Nothing more of it. Otherwise, just good, clean baseball. May the best team win.

Leave the umps out of this (please).
