How “Evil Woman” became an ELO classic

Originally released in 1975, “Evil Woman” became one of ELO’s signature hits. The track, written by frontman Jeff Lynne, was one of the last songs written for their fifth album. Face the music.

“I wrote this in a matter of minutes,” Lynne admitted Rolling Stone in 2016. “The rest of the album was finished. I listened to it and thought, “There is no good single.” So I sent the band to a soccer game and came up with “Evil Woman” on the spot. The first three chords came to mind straight away. It was the fastest thing I’ve ever done. We kept it chic and cool, a bit like an R&B song. To me it was kind of fancy, with all the big piano solos and the string arrangement. It was inspired by a particular woman, but I can’t say who. She appeared in my songs a few times.”

“Evil Woman” remains a staple on ELO’s setlists and regularly appears at the start of their concerts. Jeff Lynne’s ELO – as the band has been called since 2014 – is currently on a farewell tour, with the last show scheduled for October 26th in Los Angeles.
