Spurs’ Victor Wembanyama and Chris Paul will see their first game on Wednesday.

SAN ANTONIO – Victor Wembanyama and new signing Chris Paul will make their preseason debuts for the San Antonio Spurs on Wednesday against the Orlando Magic at Frost Bank Center.

The duo skipped Monday’s exhibition opening to rest. Devin Vassell (foot), Charles Bassey (knee), Zach Collins (shoulder) and David Duke Jr. (hip) also missed that game, a 112-107 loss to the Oklahoma City Thunder.

Spurs coach Gregg Popovich referenced “bumps, rest, a little bit of everything” when explaining his reasons for sitting out Wembanyama and Paul on Monday after what he called a “tough week” of training camp drills.

Meanwhile, Vassell, Bassey and Collins continue to increase their workloads after undergoing offseason surgeries. They, along with Nathan Mensah (right adductor muscle), will be unavailable for Wednesday’s competition.

Wembanyama is entering his second season following a historic rookie year in which he averaged 21.4 points, 10.6 rebounds and a league-leading 3.6 blocks.

The Spurs signed the 39-year-old Paul to a one-year deal in July, bringing in experienced leaders as the team looks to build around Wembanyama, the reigning NBA Rookie of the Year. Paul is entering his 20th NBA season and ranks third all-time in assists (11,894).

“I’m just excited, like everyone else, to get the chance to play alongside (Wembanyama) and a lot of the other guys in the team,” Paul said. “With him, it’s just going to be about helping him settle in better.”
