Former Tampa Bay Rays ace will go down in incredible history as a member of the Cleveland Guard

The Cleveland Guardians and Detroit Tigers will face off in Game 3 of the American League Division Series on Wednesday afternoon.

The series is currently tied at one game apiece, with each team just two wins away from advancing to the American League Championship Series.

First pitch of Game 3 is scheduled for 3:08 p.m. ET at Comerica Park. Alex Cobb is expected to pitch for Cleveland, while Detroit has not yet named a starter as of this post.

If Cobb takes the mound, he will create a rare baseball story that hasn’t been seen in nearly 30 years.

According to MLB.com’s Sarah Langs on social media:

“Weds” will be Alex Cobb’s first postseason appearance since the start of Game 3 of the 2013 ALDS for the Rays

He will be the first pitcher since Bret Saberhagen (1985 WS G7 to 1995 NLDS G4) to go more than 10 seasons between postseason starts.

Cobb, 37, missed much of this season due to injury but went 2-1 in three appearances. He posted a 2.76 ERA but only pitched 16.1 innings total.

This is the 13th season in the major leagues for Cobb, who played with Tampa Bay from 2011 to 2017. He is a 79-76 lifetime pitcher with a 3.84 ERA.

He has also played for the Baltimore Orioles, Los Angeles Angels and San Francisco Giants.

Cobb won double-digit games for the Rays in four different seasons before his departure. He teamed up with the likes of David Price and James Shields for part of that time to form an exciting group of Rays pitchers.
