Video: A Florida traffic camera captured a tornado as Hurricane Milton hits the state

A Florida Department of Transportation live camera spotted a confirmed tornado on the ground in South Florida Wednesday morning as Hurricane Milton barreled toward the state.

The funnel cloud was originally spotted with the CCat Toll Plaza camera near Alligator Alley in Tamarac, Broward County. The tornado was moving toward Palm Beach County, FOX 35 Storm Team meteorologist Brooks Garner said. Eventually it seemed to break away from the ground and dissolve into the cloud.

Hurricane Milton is still hours away from landfall, but the storm’s outer bands are already bringing rain, wind and the possibility of tornadoes across the state.

Latest updates on Hurricane Milton:

The tornado threat for Central Florida will increase Wednesday afternoon as the hurricane approaches the Gulf Coast, Garner said.

“Tornadoes are a common element in hurricanes, particularly in the outer bands where they occurred,” said FOX 35 meteorologist Jessica Dobson.

“It’s pretty rare that we see them so clearly — especially on a DOT camera,” she said.

Extremely dangerous and life-threatening storm surge as well as heavy rain, flooding and damaging winds are expected along Florida’s Gulf Coast as Hurricane Milton approaches. Heavy rain, damaging winds, flooding and tornadoes are the biggest threats to Central Florida.
