Sabrina Carpenter came by The Tonight Show to perform their hit single “Espresso.” Carpenter performed with a live band and a group of backup singers, giving the performance a sultry vintage club vibe as she walked from the stage to Jimmy Fallon’s desk.

Carpenter is currently on her Short n’ Sweet tour, which took place at Madison Square Garden in New York City The Tonight Show Ribbons, earlier this week. The performance marked her debut at the legendary venue.

“I’m so fascinated by New York City,” she told the audience. “This is like a home for me. The first time I played in New York City I think I was 16 and it was at the Highline Ballroom. That was all of you not There. “All my life I’ve always wanted to play Madison Square Garden, but I wasn’t sure if it would be in front of a sold-out crowd my first time.”

“Espresso,” released in April, is from Carpenter’s latest LP, Short and sweet. It became a pop culture phenomenon and arguably the song of the summer. Last month, the singer won the VMA Award for Song of the Year for the single.

Carpenter recently appeared on the cover of TIME and spoke in an interview about the perception of female pop stars. She also responded to fans who were outraged to learn that her family had witnessed her flaunting her sexuality on stage at Madison Square Garden last weekend. “My fans on the internet are saying, ‘I can’t believe she’s bowing down to her grandparents!'” Carpenter said. “I think, girls, they don’t pay attention. They just say, I can’t believe all these people are here.”

She added: “Sometimes there is still a mother who has a strong opinion about how you should dress. And to that I just say: Don’t come to the show and that’s okay. It’s unfortunate that there was ever any reason for criticism because, honestly, going on stage in front of so many people and acting like it’s nothing is the scariest thing in the world. If the only thing that helps you is the way you feel comfortable when you dress, then that’s what you need to do.”
