In this 100-minute documentary from Cullen Hoback, HBO attempts to build a case based on circumstantial evidence that positions Todd as the mysterious creator of Bitcoin.

The argument put forward? Todd allegedly used the pseudonym Satoshi to disguise his identity and give more weight to his project when he was finishing his studies.

For Hoback, Todd’s strategy was to simulate the creation of Bitcoin by an experienced cryptography expert rather than a relatively unknown student.

Among the clues put forward, the documentary highlights several messages posted online by Todd, which Hoback said “were a nod” to his alleged role in the birth of Bitcoin.

For example, in a disturbing message, Todd describes himself as “the world’s greatest expert on how to sacrifice your Bitcoins,” a phrase interpreted as a reference to the allegedly destroyed access to the 1.1 million BTC attributed to Nakamoto.
