In The A complete unknown Trailer: Timotheé Chalamet’s Bob Dylan faces pressure to define himself as his music career reaches stratospheric heights. “Two hundred people in this room and everyone wants me to be someone else,” Chalamet says in the trailer.

At the end of the trailer, released Tuesday, Chalamet breaks loose, playing “Like a Rolling Stone” to a raucous audience at the 1965 Newport Folk Festival.

A complete unknown follows 19-year-old Dylan’s arrival in New York in the early ’60s, the Minnesota folk singer’s sold-out concert halls and chart-topping hits, and the historic electronic performance at the 1965 Newport Folk Festival. Elle Fanning plays Dylan’s friend Sylvie Russo, with Monica Barbaro as Joan Baez, Edward Norton as folk legend Pete Seeger and Boyd Holbrook as Johnny Cash. Other actors include Norbert Leo Butz, Dan Fogler and Scoot McNairy.

The director of the film James Mangold (Walk along the line, Ford vs Ferrari) has previously defined A complete unknown as an ensemble piece rather than a Dylan biopic, to demonstrate the folk musician’s complex personality. In a conversation with Dylan before the film’s production, Mangold described the film as a man who suffocates in his hometown of Minnesota, rises to stardom, and suffocates again before running away. And Dylan agreed.

“I didn’t want to turn Bob Dylan into a simple character who unlocks one simple thing that then makes you say, ‘Ah, I understand him now,'” said James Mangold Rolling Stone in July. “I don’t think that’s possible after meeting him. I also think it’s pretty clear that he spent most of his life trying to avoid this very act from anyone. This is inherently an act of reduction – reducing someone to a simple revelation, a Freudian plot of their life.”

The film will be released on Christmas Day.
