Will DeWanna Bonner retire after this season?

After losing last year’s semifinals to the New York Liberty, the Connecticut Sun awaits the most important game of the season and hopes to upset the Minnesota Lynx on Tuesday. While the Sun have the longest active playoff streak and have reached every elimination streak since 2017, they are looking to make franchise history and claim their first championship title. However, the Sun could be in for some difficult news if a certain NBC Sports talent is to be believed.

Subria Whitaker went to X on Tuesday to list Suns forward DeWanna Bonner’s accomplishments and address the news of her possible retirement. “Hello?????? DO YOU HEAR ME??? DEWANNA BONNER IS CURRENTLY FIGHTING FOR CONNECTICUT’S FIRST CHAMPIONSHIP, IS ON WAY TO BEING NUMBER 3 OR 2 ON THE ALL-TIME GOAL LIST AND JUST HOURS LEFT TO HER LAST WNBA GAME OF ALL TIME. FOCUS ON DEWANNA BONNER,” Whitaker tweeted on X.

Bonner is currently fourth on the all-time top scorer list alongside Tina Thompson. The 5th overall pick from 2009 has 7,482 points, just 6 points behind the Houston Comets star. With a current average of 16 points, the Sun #24 is expected to take second place from Tina Charles, who is 14 points ahead.

The Auburn graduate’s most notable performances came against the Indiana Fever in Game 1 of the WNBA playoffs and Game 4 of the semifinals against the Lynx. In both duels, Bonner scored 22 and 18 points, respectively, helping the Sun win, which somewhat gave the impression of a possible performance in the 2024 season. Therefore, it remains to be seen whether the Suns are willing to lose such a valuable player.

DeWanna Bonner’s possible retirement is under investigation

“In the last two years she has found the fountain of youth” Suns head coach Stephanie White spoke about Bonner. At 37, she is the second oldest player on the Sun’s roster and the third oldest in the 2024 WNBA. Therefore, even though speculation about her retirement is high, Bonner appears to be an effective and experienced part of the roster.

During last season, when the Suns made it to the semifinals, Bonner was the leading scorer with 17.4 points per game. Although she was once again the leading scorer this season, she ranks second in scoring average for the Connecticut-based team following the arrival of Marina Mabrey. Can this be a taste of what’s next?

Bonner played for the Phoenix Mercury for ten seasons until 2019 before moving to the Sun. “I’m kind of a late bloomer in the whole process.” she said it in her own words. But once she got to the sun, there was no turning back. By signing a four-year contract, the small forward improved point by point and became a main reason for the Sun’s success. However, starting in 2024, she has a one-year contract with the Suns that expires at the end of this season, again an indication that the Suns could part ways with Bonner.

Although the franchise has not revealed any hints about her possible retirement, it remains a hope that she will end her W career on a good note.
