Dakotah Lindwurm was able to keep up with the leading runners until the halfway point of 13.1 kilometers, but was then unable to keep up with the pace of the leading group.

At the 30k mark, Lindwurm – the leading American runner – was 46 seconds behind the leaders. Another American, Emily Sisson, was more than two minutes behind the leaders.

Still in the leading group was Sifan Hassan of the Netherlands, winner of the bronze medals in the 5,000 m and 10,000 m at the Stade de France. The leading group also included three Kenyan runners (Sharon Lokedi, Peres Jepchirchir and Hellen Obiri), two Ethiopians (Tigst Assefa and Amane Beriso Shankule), Romanian Delvine Relin Meringor, Japanese Yuka Suzuki and Bahraini Eunice Chebichii Chumba. Lokedi reached the 30 km mark as the best runner with a time of 1:43:59.

The women’s marathon takes place in Paris and 29-year-old American Dakotah Lindwurm was in the middle of the leading group until halfway through the race.

Lindwurm reached third place with a time of 1:13:25 at kilometer 13.1, just ahead of Australian Jessica Stenson in first place with 1:13:22. Lindwurm was one of the 20 runners who formed the leading group.

Among the runners in the leading group is Dutchwoman Sifan Hassan, who also won bronze medals in the women’s 5,000 and 10,000 meter races at the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris.

Fellow American Emily Sisson was 27 seconds behind the leader. A third American in the race, Fiona O’Keeffe, dropped out of the race during the first few miles.

The Americans have won a medal at every Olympic Games since women’s basketball was added to the program in 1976. If they reach the final, they could send 42-year-old Diana Taurasi home with an unprecedented sixth Olympic gold medal.

In Tokyo, the US women won their first Olympic gold in indoor volleyball, beating traditional power Brazil. Indoor volleyball has been part of the Olympic program since 1964, and the US has won one gold, three silvers and two bronzes. Jordan Larson returns as team captain after being named the Most Valuable Player of the Tokyo Games.

Today is the women’s marathon day, which takes the runners along a scenic route that passes the Hotel de Ville de Paris, the Eiffel Tower and the Palace of Versailles. For many years, the men’s marathon was held on the last day, thus ending the Olympic Games. In Paris, the women are showcased on the final day of the Games, which ends just hours before the closing ceremony.

Unlike the opening ceremony, the closing ceremony will be held in the National Stadium. NBC and Peacock will broadcast live from 2:00 p.m. ET. Jimmy Fallon and Mike Tirico are scheduled to be NBC’s presenters. The parade of athletes will create a party atmosphere with music and dancing. At the end, Paris will hand over the floor to the organizers of the 2028 Games in Los Angeles.
