Map shows closed Waffle locations before Hurricane Milton

Waffle House released a map showing the locations of its closed restaurants in Florida ahead of the arrival of Hurricane Milton.

As of 5:00 p.m. ET on Tuesday, the National Hurricane Center said Milton had re-intensified into a Category 5 storm after being downgraded to 4 in Tampa Bay.

Waffle House posted an updated map at 3:30 p.m. ET, identifying restaurants that are closed, offering limited service, or open 24 hours a day and offering a full menu. The restaurant chain added: “**Due to possible variations in Milton’s career, this information is subject to change without notice. Please follow local guidelines.”

Evacuation orders were issued for dozens of Florida counties before Milton made landfall. Mandatory evacuation orders are in effect along the entire west coast of the state, from Levy County south to Collier County.

Schools and universities across the Sunshine State were also closed to prepare for Milton. Several emergency shelters have opened in counties where evacuation orders are in effect for residents who cannot leave the area.

The Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) has taken steps to prepare roads and support evacuation efforts. Gov. Ron DeSantis also ordered the suspension of tolls in Central and West Florida.

FDOT also implemented emergency shoulder use on Interstates 4 and 75 to “ease traffic flow for travelers evacuating the potential impact area of the storm,” according to a press release from the agency Monday.

A Waffle House spokesperson said Newsweek via email Tuesday that the company’s “mission continues to be to keep our employees out of harm’s way.”

“Accordingly, we will preemptively close restaurants in the areas expected to be hardest hit with the goal of reopening them as soon as it is safe to do so to serve the communities that have supported us over the years,” the spokesperson said. He added that the company “will follow local evacuation orders.”

Politicians and local leaders have also urged residents to follow evacuation orders before Milton strikes. Tampa Mayor Jane Castor said during an appearance on CNN on Monday that residents who think they can “weather out” the storm are making a fatal mistake.

“There has never been anything like this before,” said Castor. “Helene was a wake-up call, which is catastrophic in the truest sense of the word. And I can say without any dramatization: If you choose to stay in one of these evacuation areas, you will die.”

President Joe Biden said Tuesday morning that Milton “could be the worst storm to hit Florida in over a century, and God doesn’t want it, but right now that’s what it looks like.”

“If you are under an evacuation order, you should evacuate now,” Biden added. “They should have evacuated already. It’s a matter of life and death, and that’s no exaggeration.”
