2024 Presidential Election: How to vote in Virginia, voter registration, what’s on the ballot and more

How to Vote Early in Virginia

Early voting for the November 5th general election began on September 20th. The last day for early voting is November 2nd.

All registry offices offer early voting. Some communities may offer early voting at additional locations. Hours of operation at these locations and when they begin offering early voting vary.

For all information about early voting and the ballot drop box, voters are encouraged to contact general registry office.

During early voting, polling stations are open from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. You do not need to provide a reason or fill out an application to vote early.

You will need to provide acceptable identificationB. a Virginia driver’s license, or sign an identity verification form to vote at the polls, or a provisional ballot will be offered, and you will have until noon on Friday after the election to provide a copy of acceptable identification to the Board of Elections, or sign an ID confirmation.

Provisional voters will receive a notice reminding them of the deadline and right to attend the Board of Elections meeting

You can vote for the 2024 general election at a registry office in the district in which you live. All registry offices offer early voting.

How do I register to vote in Virginia?

You can Register to vote online, by mail or in person.

You can register online via the Citizen portal of the electoral department. You will need a Virginia driver’s license or ID card, your Social Security number, and your date of birth.

To register via email, download and complete an Registration applicationthen send it by post to your registry office or call registry office to request a form. You can also pick up a registration form at public libraries, Department of Motor Vehicles locations, and Armed Forces recruiting offices or other places.

Register in person with an application at your student office. The last day to register to vote is October 15th.

How to vote by postal vote

Virginia residents have several options for voting by mail in the upcoming election. Here are step-by-step instructions to ensure your mail-in ballot is counted.

Requesting an Absentee Ballot in Virginia

To vote by post, you must apply for a postal vote. You can do this online through the Virginia Department of Elections website or by submitting a paper application. All required forms can be found on the Virginia Department of Elections forms page website.

The application deadline for postal voting by post is October 25th.

After you submit your absentee ballot application, you can track the status of your ballot. If you submitted an absentee ballot request to have a ballot mailed, you can track your ballot by logging in Ballot Scout.

Permanent absence list

If you would prefer to vote by postal vote in future elections, you can register on the permanent absentee list. You can apply online via the citizen portal or submit a paper application to your local registry office. Instructions for the paper application can be found on the form itself.

Returning your cast ballot

Once you receive and complete your mail-in ballot, read the instructions carefully. Submit your ballot at the local registry office by 7:00 p.m. on election day. Alternatively, you can also hand it in at the designated drop-off points. If you are mailing your ballot, make sure it is postmarked on or before Election Day and is received at your registrar’s office by noon on the third day after the election.

Emergency mail-in ballots

In emergencies, such as hospitalization or the death of an immediate family member, you may be eligible for an emergency absentee ballot if you were unable to submit your request by the regular deadline.

How to vote in person in Virginia

Virginia law requires voters to present acceptable identification or sign an attestation statement at the polls.

Voting requirements:

  • Voters without valid ID can sign an ID confirmation or vote provisionally.
  • In order for their votes to be counted, provisional voters must provide identification or sign the ID Confirmation Form by noon on the Friday following the election.

Acceptable IDs:

  • Review the list of acceptable voter IDs before you go to the polls.

Preliminary election process:

  • Voters without ID will receive written instructions on how to present their ID or sign the ID verification form after provisional voting.
  • IDs or signed statements may be submitted by fax, email, in person or by mail, but must be received by the local board of elections by noon on the Friday following the election.

On Election Day, November 5, polls across the Commonwealth of Virginia will be open from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m.

What’s on the ballot in Virginia?

In Virginia, Vice President Kamala Harris and former President Donald Trump will be joined by third-party candidates Chase Oliver, Jill Stein, Claudia De la Cruz and Cornel West in the 2024 presidential election.
