The Detroit Pistons started the 2024-25 season on a positive note with a stunning win over the Milwaukee Bucks.

There was a lot to like, including the play of rookie Ron Holland II and the offensive efficiency of Jaden Ivey.

Veteran Malik Beasley made his presence felt as a shooter and mentor, and the Pistons will be hoping that continues tonight at home against the Suns.

These are just preseason games of course, but with a brutal early schedule awaiting them as the regular season begins, it would be good for the Pistons to build some confidence before the games get real.

The Pistons were missing Ausar Thompson, Tobias Harris and Bobi Klintman for Game 1, and all three are listed as day-to-day for today’s game against the Suns.

Thompson still does not have live clearance and therefore will not play tonight. Harris is recovering from an illness so he can return, and Klintman is recovering from a right calf bruise he sustained during training camp.

It would be nice to get them all back before the regular season as the Pistons look to integrate a lot of new faces into the rotation and need as many reps as possible.

I will look for consistency in defense, which was completely lacking last season. Coach Bickerstaff is clearly trying to build a defensive identity, and the Pistons were much better from the second quarter on against the Bucks, but can they pull it off for a full game tonight against another strong offense?

I’ll also be watching rookie Ron Holland II as he had a really good game defensively and along the perimeter against Milwaukee and is holding his own in the starting lineup while Ausar Thompson is out.

Hopefully we’ll see the return of Tobias Harris to add some stability to the rotation, and I’d like to see Cade Cunningham stop dribbling and take a few shots at the rim to boost his confidence.
