Miami Heat Dedicates Court in Pat Riley’s Name

Pat Riley’s arrival in Miami ushered in an era of successful stability that included three championships.

Already synonymous with the Miami Heat and their trio of championships, Pat Riley will further associate his name with the franchise. The team announced Monday that it will brand its Kaseya Center court and all future courts with the name of its former coach and longtime team president, starting with an official unveiling on opening night Oct. 23.

The honor comes as Riley begins his 30th season with the Heat. The franchise won its first championship with Riley as head coach in 2006 and another pair in 2012 and 2013 with him leading the front office.

“Thirty years, three championships, countless moments – none of it would have been possible without Pat Riley at the helm of the ship,” Heat managing general partner Micky Arison said in a statement. “Pat has accomplished so much for this franchise and this city that it is only fitting that his name is forever engraved on the hardwood where we are reminded every day of his impact on the game and the Heat.”

Riley’s leadership with the Heat has led to Miami becoming a destination for NBA talent. Alonzo Mourning, Shaquille O’Neal, LeBron James, Chris Bosh, Goran Dragic and Jimmy Butler are just a few of the All-Star talent brought to Miami under Riley.

Since his arrival in Miami in 1996, the Heat have won three championships and reached the NBA Finals seven times.

“This has been an incredible journey that Mickey and I have taken together over the last 30 years,” Riley said in the team’s statement. “The goal from day one was to win, and win big. We did it. We won championships, sprayed each other with champagne, held parades, celebrated on this floor, in this arena, in the streets with our great fans and hung the names of our greatest players from the rafters. Naming the dish after me would have made my parents very proud. It is a great honor for me, Chris and my family.”
