The Patriots QB expects to play against the Texans

Jacoby Brissett was not told Monday whether the Patriots are planning a change at quarterback.

On WEEI, the veteran quarterback said he expects to start Sunday against the Texans and has no questions about his status as New England’s first-stringer. Although Mayo had made every effort in recent weeks to declare Brissett the starter, he did not do so on Monday after a 15-10 loss to the Dolphins and was critical of the quarterback’s performance in his press conference.

“It just wasn’t good enough,” Mayo said. “I thought we played well enough defensively and on special teams to win the football game. Look, as a quarterback – and he understands this – he touches the ball every single play and we didn’t win the game or score enough points to win the game. I think he would have the same opinion that it wasn’t good enough.”

Although the player drafted one slot ahead of Drake Maye excelled in Washington, Mayo said he wasn’t fazed by Jayden Daniels’ early success and offered an unorthodox comparison on WEEI.

“I would say as coaches and in this building, we have to do what is better, not just in the short term, but in the long term,” Mayo said. “Which I understand and don’t fall into the narrative fallacy. I mean, this goes back to when (Mark) Zuckerberg started Facebook and everyone started dropping out of college because they thought they were starting the next Facebook. We see some quarterbacks out here doing well. There have also been hundreds of examples over the years of things not moving in the same direction. And that’s how I feel.”

During this appearance on The Greg Hill Show, Mayo also pointed to the pressure Brissett has been under all season as a catalyst for some of the disappointing games.

“Even yesterday he got hit pretty bad,” Mayo said. “I admire his toughness and his ability to get back up and keep playing the game. He made some good throws yesterday. He also missed a few shots and that has been evident throughout the season. Saying that brings him to his knees and I think it’s unfair to sit here and be too critical of him, but at the same time we have to recognize that we have to be able to give this team the best chance Throw the ball to give victory. It is a solution-oriented business and as coaches we have to find solutions.”
