Lisa Marie Presley’s posthumous memoir lifts the curtain on how the star grieved the loss of her son Benjamin Keough.

In From here to the great unknown, Lisa Marie writes that after Benjamin, whom his family called Ben Ben, died by suicide in 2020 at age 27, she decided to keep his body on dry ice for two months in a separate casitas bedroom in their Los Angeles home to keep.

“There is no law in the state of California that says you have to bury someone immediately,” writes Lisa Marie.

Lisa Marie’s daughter Riley Keough, Benjamin’s sister, writes that it was “really important” for her mother to have “enough time to say goodbye to him, just as she had done to her father,” Elvis Presley, in 1977 died when he died she was 9.

To bring Benjamin’s body into the house, Lisa Marie writes, she enlisted the help of a compassionate funeral director.

“Having my father in the house after his death was incredibly helpful because I was able to spend time with him and talk to him,” writes Lisa Marie.

Lisa Marie writes that they had to keep the room with Benjamin’s body at 55 degrees. She went back and forth as she debated where to bury him: Hawaii or Graceland.

“That was one of the reasons it took so long,” she writes. “I got so used to him, looked after him and kept him there. I think it would scare the hell out of anyone else if their son was there like that. But not me.”

“I was very fortunate that there was a way to still parent him and delay it a little longer so that it was okay for me to put him to rest,” she continues.

At some point, Riley writes, she and her mother decided to get a tattoo in Benjamin’s honor. He had Riley’s name tattooed on his collarbone and Lisa’s name tattooed on his hand, so they decided to get his name tattooed on the corresponding body parts.

To get the tattoo perfect, Lisa Marie invited the tattoo artist into the room with Benjamin’s body to look at his tattoos up close.

“I’ve had an extremely absurd life, but this moment ranks in the top five,” Riley writes.

Shortly after they got tattooed, Riley writes, “We all got the feeling from my brother that he didn’t want his body in this house anymore. ‘Guys,’ he seemed to be saying, ‘This is getting weird.’ Even my mom said she could feel him talking to her and said, “This is crazy mom, what are you doing?”

The family then held a memorial service for Benjamin in Malibu. Lisa Marie ultimately decided to have him buried at Graceland with his grandfather Elvis. In his coffin, Riley placed a pair of her yellow Nikes, which he had always loved.

Three years after Benjamin’s death, Lisa Marie died at the age of 54 from a small intestinal obstruction, a long-term complication of bariatric surgery. A month before her death, Riley told her mother she would help her finish her memoir, and she has now made good on that promise.

“Because my mother was Elvis Presley’s daughter, she was constantly talked about, argued about, and dissected,” Riley tells PEOPLE in an exclusive email interview for last week’s cover story. “What she wanted to do in her memoir and what I hope I did.” What I did in completing it for her is to follow the magazine headline and reveal the core of who she was: To transform her into a three-dimensional human being: the best mother, a wild child, a wild friend, an underrated artist, open-hearted, funny, traumatized, joyful, grieving, everything she was in her remarkable life, I would like to give my mother one express themselves in ways that escaped her during her lifetime.”
