Florida gas stations are running out of fuel ahead of Hurricane Milton

Several gas stations in Florida near Tampa have run out of fuel as people evacuated ahead of the arrival of Hurricane Milton.

Milton was downgraded to a Category 4 hurricane with maximum sustained winds of 145 mph Tuesday morning, according to the latest update from the National Hurricane Center (NHC). The storm weakened slightly after reaching Category 5 on Monday. Forecasts suggest Milton will make landfall in Tampa on Wednesday evening or early Thursday morning, but expected wind speeds and the exact location of landfall are still uncertain.

Officials are urging people to heed evacuation orders as Milton is expected to be the first hurricane to directly hit the Tampa area in over 100 years. Photos and videos on social media show highways and highways clogged with cars as people try to flee areas likely to be hit hardest by the storm.

Due to the mass evacuations, the available fuel at several gas stations has been used up. GasBuddy, a company that tracks gas availability, indicates that dozens of gas stations near Tampa are running on limited fuel. An employee at the Wawa at 25155 Maren Way recounted it Newsweek that the gas station was out of gas but was expecting a truck delivery sometime Tuesday. The RaceTrac in Wesley Chapel also confirmed that he was out of gas.

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis reassured Floridians at a news conference Tuesday morning that there is no fuel shortage in the state and that officials are working to deliver fuel to gas stations in need.

“There is no fuel shortage,” DeSantis said. “In the state of Florida, fuel continues to arrive through ports and what we are doing to transport it locally. But the queues at gas stations are long. “The gas stations are running out faster than usual. And that’s why the state of Florida is helping with the mission to be able to get fuel to the gas stations.”

DeSantis also said Milton was moving slower than initially expected and that the storm could slightly change direction to hit north or south of Tampa.

“Wherever it hits land, there will be impacts far beyond what the cone actually shows,” he said.

Tampa has endured the effects of hurricanes but has not been directly hit in over 100 years. Since the last hurricane made landfall in 1921, National Weather Service (NWS) meteorologist Keily Delerme previously reported Newsweek that many changes have taken place in Tampa since then. The city now has a significantly higher population and more infrastructure.

Milton’s path will likely take the storm across Florida, with widespread impacts on coastal regions of Georgia and South Carolina.
