Pakistan 556 gave it their all against England in the opening Test at the Multan ground – Sport

Pakistan scored 556 in their first innings on the second day of the opening Test against England on Tuesday.

Shan Masood (151), Abdullah Shafique (102) and Salman Agha (104 not out) scored hundreds while Saud Shakeel scored 82.

Jack Leach was the pick of the England bowlers with a score of 3-160.

Saud missed a hundred but Salman hit a brisk 79 that helped Pakistan to a commanding 515 for eight at tea.

Pakistan lost Saud and Aamer Jamal in the second session but Salman hit two sixes and 10 fours with his aggressive batting to take them past the 500 mark. Shaheen Afridi paid him a tribute on the 13th.

England struggled with little reward on Monday and when play resumed the same was even worse as Naseem Shah, a key cog in Pakistan’s new-ball attack, proved he could contribute with the bat too.

Naseem hit three sixes in his career-best 33 to deny England a breakthrough in the first hour, despite suffering blows to his helmet and bowling hand.

Naseem worked in a 64-run partnership with Saud before his 82-ball contest ended after he tickled Brydon Carse at leg slip to Harry Brook, giving the debutant seamer his first Test wicket.

The next man up, Mohammad Rizwan, fell for a 12-ball duck, taking on Jack Leach and playing the ball to Chris Woakes midway through the game. Saud (82′) seemed ready for the hundred but was caught by Shoaib Bashir’s slip.

Thanks to Salman’s free hit, Pakistan scored 118 runs from 26 overs in the session, cementing their position in the competition.

England burned two of their three scores in the innings. Ollie Pope now has an unflattering 0-13 record as captain of the England team.

Saud had stayed on course and became the third Pakistani batsman to hit a hundred in the opening Test against England as the hosts reached 397 for six at lunch.

Naseem shone in the role of night watchman, breaking a career best of 33 and forming a 64-run partnership in partnership with Saud, who was on 67 at the break.

Salman Agha was yet to open his account at the other end of the Batter’s Paradise at the Multan Cricket Stadium.

England were left to toil without much reward on Monday and when play resumed the same was even worse as Naseem, a key cog in Pakistan’s new attack, proved he could contribute with the bat too.

Naseem hit three sixes to deny England a breakthrough in the first hour, although he suffered blows to his helmet and bowling hand.

His 82-ball resistance finally came to an end when he tickled Brydon Carse at leg slip to Harry Brook, giving the debutant his first Test wicket.

The next man up, Mohammad Rizwan, fell for a 12-ball duck, taking on Jack Leach and throwing the ball to Chris Woakes midway through the game.

Saud appeared to be in control as he hit eight fours with his fine stroke.
