9 Iconic Black Women Lawyers on TV

With Reasonable Doubt’s Jax Stewart the newest Black lawyer to hit our television screens, TheWrap wanted to take a trip down memory lane and rank the most famous Black women lawyers on television today.

To fans, these roles may just be the characters we see weekly on our favorite shows, but to the actresses who play them and the writers who write them, their existence has both the representation of black women on screen and of them influenced the careers of black Hollywood actresses.

This also applies to Kerry Washington’s role in “Scandal.” While we primarily recognize Olivia Pope as a crisis manager in the series, she was a former lawyer who often used these tactics from her legal career. Until Washington signed on for the role – which ABC originally pitched to a non-black actress – there hadn’t been a drama series with a black lead actress on television for 37 years. And it ultimately paved the way for future black actresses to get their chance.

And on the other hand, black actresses have pointed out that these roles can sometimes result in black, particularly darker-skinned, actresses being pushed into such positions of authority.

“After a while you become known for your ‘power.’ People see your power, your strength, and want you to play that all the time,” Erika Alexander told TheWrap while discussing her character Coraline from Cord Jefferson’s Oscar-winning “American Fiction.” “Also with ‘Living Single’. Maxine Shaw exudes a certain brilliance and strength when she walks into a room. She is her own force of nature. You can basically get locked up there… By the way, I wasn’t the only one. Most dark-skinned black women play such roles. Prosecutors, captains, all that, (we’re) not there to be a little careful and drop the groceries and be sweet and let Jeffrey Wright help you pick them up and then drink wine and talk about it, who you are.”

The complexity of the roles and the Black women who gave themselves to them are why we love them and why we show up to see them every time.
