Carlos Rodon’s wife reveals online threats after Yankees upset

Carlos Rodon had to deal with his slider disappearing in the fourth inning, and after a 4-2 loss to Kansas City in the ALDS in the Bronx, the left-hander and his family had to deal with online threats.

Rodon’s wife Ashley posted screenshots of X posted by anonymous users who mocked the couple’s use of IVF and wrote unprintable messages about their children.

“People are pretty disgusting sometimes,” Rodon said when told the subject of the news. “But that doesn’t explain Yankee fans. I don’t think they are. I understand that (the fans) are frustrated with the game, but my message to the fans all around is: “We’re only human.” We’re not always perfect. … Let’s not forget that this is just a game and let’s not threaten people’s families.”

The ugliness came after Rodon allowed four runs over 3²/₃ innings in his first postseason start as a Yankee.

The left-hander’s postseason career as a Yankee seemed to be off to a great start before collapsing in the fourth season.

He struck out the front row in turn, taking only 12 pitches, and punctuated each whiff with an exclamation, spinning on the mound and shouting.

That trust soon disappeared.

In a scene all too familiar to Yankee fans, Rodon saw his stuff quickly disappear, this time in a critical situation when he allowed four runs early in the fourth after the Yankees were tied by 1 in the bottom of the third :0 had taken the lead.

Rodon looked dominant in the first two innings, striking out four of the first seven batters he faced and striking out six before getting about two hits in the third.

But Salvador Perez led off the fourth with a big home run to left and a hanging 2-0 slider to make the score 1-1, and things only got worse from there.

Yuli Gurriel followed with a single off a slider and moved to second on a wild pitch.

Tommy Pham gave Kansas City the lead with a single to right center off another bad slider, and after Rodon was on the verge of ending the inning without further damage with a strikeout by Hunter Renfroe, Rodon was again pinch-hit by a single to right after one Slider burned by Garrett Hampson to make it 3-1 and end his night.

Ian Hamilton came in and gave Garcia an RBI single in the fourth and final run of the inning.

Rodon lamented the “hittable sliders.” I could have done better with these pitches. I wanted to be better.”

The end result was completely different than when I started.

The Yankees were hoping the 31-year-old would build on his strong regular season, which saw him finish with a 2.20 ERA in his last five starts.

Instead, things ended badly for Rodon both on and off the field.

“It’s part of business,” Rodon said of the threats. “We get paid very well to play a game, but there is no place for people threatening harmless little children.”
