The Dallas Mavericks begin their preseason on Monday night against their division rival Memphis Grizzlies. Dallas enters the season with high expectations after reaching the NBA Finals last year, while the Grizzlies struggled with injuries throughout the roster and won just 27 games. However, both are expected to win almost 50 games this season.

Dallas, despite last year’s success, had a busy offseason, highlighted by the signing of four-time champion and five-time All-Star Klay Thompson, who spent his entire career with the Golden State Warriors. Naji Marshall, Quentin Grimes and Spencer Dinwiddie also joined the Mavs this offseason, and they should all be rotation players.

Memphis selected Zach Edey in the lottery of this year’s NBA Draft and he is expected to start. How he fits into the NBA given his size will be interesting, and he has a tough draw in his first preseason game against Dereck Lively II and Daniel Gafford. Rookie center Jamarion Sharp, who was the tallest player in college basketball last year, may also play some minutes against him.

The Mavericks are already dealing with some injuries and may use more of their young players. Luka Doncic is being reevaluated for a calf bruise he suffered last week, Dante Exum suffered a “serious” right wrist injury and is out indefinitely, and Kessler Edwards and Maxi Kleber missed some time in training camp with ankle injuries.
