Kyrie Irving, Klay Thompson and several Mavericks not playing in the preseason opener

Mavericks fans will have to wait a little longer to see Klay Thompson play for his new team.

The biggest name of Dallas’ offseason additions will not be available for Monday’s season opener against the Memphis Grizzlies due to a layoff. Mavericks guard Kyrie Irving is also sitting out due to a break.

There are several other Mavericks who will not play on Monday night due to injuries, most notably Luka Doncic and PJ Washington. Doncic’s left calf contusion, which was scheduled to be reexamined this week, is keeping him out of the game. Washington is dealing with tightness in his left hip.

The Mavericks will be without four of the team’s projected starters, along with Dante Exum (right wrist), Maxi Kleber (left ankle sprain), Brandon Williams (right calf sprain) and Kessler Edwards (left ankle sprain).

The following players are available for Monday’s game: Spencer Dinwiddie, Daniel Gafford, Quentin Grimes, Jaden Hardy, AJ Lawson, Dereck Lively II, Naji Marshall, Dwight Powell, Olivier-Maxence Prosper, Markieff Morris, Jamarion Sharp, Emanuel Miller and Jazian Gortman.

Thompson, Washington, Exum, Kleber and Edwards did not participate in Sunday’s Fan Jam, while Doncic and Irving served as head coaches of their respective practice squads. Fans expressed their excitement at seeing Thompson twice during the open practice by chanting “WE WANT KLAY!”

Thompson’s next opportunity to make his Mavericks debut will be Thursday when the Utah Jazz visit American Airlines Center.
