Documentary producers the Menendez Brothers on Leslie Abramson’s reaction

The production team behind Netflix’s new documentary about the Menendez brothers began working on their project four years ago. What began as a letter turned into a phone call from Lyle Menendez that would initiate his and his brother Erik’s eventual participation The Menendez brotherswhich is now streaming.

Ahead of Monday’s premiere of the two-hour documentary, Campfire Studios’ Ross Dinerstein and Rebecca Evans spoke The Hollywood Reporter last week, they commented on recent developments in the case after the Los Angeles District Attorney’s Office reviewed new evidence, as well as the cultural movement pushing for the brothers’ release (thanks in part to the Netflix hit). Monster series) who were convicted of the murder of their parents, José and Mary Louise “Kitty” Menendez, and sentenced to life in prison without parole in 1996.

Now that the documentary is out, which features rare phone interviews with Erik and Lyle – and with an accompanying podcast set to release three episodes with more audio recordings on Wednesday – you can find more of it below THR‘s conversation with Dinerstein and Evans, including their hopes for continuing to question the brothers, their correspondence with attorney Leslie Abramson, and their response to criticism of the defense-focused document.

Are there any plans for you to keep the cameras rolling? Would you like to continue the story?

HORSE DINER STONE We would like to continue. The podcast covers a lot of that. But we believe this story is far from over and we would like to continue.

Do you think Erik and Lyle would be available for new interviews if you continued?

DINER STONE Yes, we do. The trust between us and them and their families has already been built.

REBECCA EVANS They would definitely like to talk to us about what happened.

Their habeas petition, currently under review, could pave the way for the brothers to be retried, resentenced to a shorter prison term or released. Do you think they could withstand further scrutiny at this point in their lives?

EVANS It’s hard to say not to be her. But I know that they had a lot of time to reflect on what happened, to rehabilitate themselves and to find themselves. So I’m sure they would be in a different headspace, but I think you’d have to ask them.

They attach an emailed statement from defense attorney Leslie Abramson to the end title cards. I’m curious about the correspondence that you had with her, or the correspondence that Erik and Lyle had with her, and why she hasn’t said much publicly about the case.

EVANS I definitely can’t speak for her just because she’s such a strong and courageous woman for what she took on in light of that case. I’m really happy for her to see it. I hope she takes a look at this. She has notoriously never spoken out since the case. She said it was a valiant effort on my part to reach out to her (laughs) and praised myself for it, but ultimately no. I wish I could speak for her, but she is a difficult person.

The prosecutor of the first trial in 1993, Pamela Bozanich, participates in your documentary and takes an opposite view when she says: “This whole defense was made up, and with artifice, but it was made up.” What would you say about that Criticism saying that this document is one-sided or too focused on defense?

EVANS It’s always important for us to represent multiple sides and I think that’s why Pamela didn’t really hesitate when she came on board. As documentary filmmakers, we need to provide all sides so that the audience can contribute their own thoughts, ideas and questions. There are other people in the documentary who feel more similar to Pam, and then there are even more people who feel more similar to Leslie, for example. I think it was really important for us to meet all sides. I hope this comes out. And so getting Pam was really no problem.

DINER STONE And that’s what we’re known for. If you have seen our Laci Peterson document (American Murder: Laci Peterson), we also interviewed Scott Peterson’s family.

What do you hope for Erik and Lyle now and what’s next for them? (A hearing is scheduled for November 29th.)

EVANS Just as I feel for all of our interviewees, I just hope that they feel that we told their story honestly and fairly. That goes for Pam, that goes for Erik, that goes for Lyle. I hope everyone feels that our intentions were honest from the start and that what they had to say was acted on.

DINER STONE One of the things I’m so proud of is that (American Murder: Laci Petersen) came out, we got the nicest message from Laci’s mother. We said we would do something and we did it. We were transparent with her about who our story would be and who would be involved, and she thanked us.

The Menendez brothers The documentary is now streaming on Netflix.
