Suspect shot, no police officers injured

ATLANTA, Ga. (Atlanta News First) – A man was shot and killed after he opened fire on officers outside the Gwinnett County Jail Monday afternoon.

The prison is now locked after the the sheriff’s office said There was an “active shooter situation.” There is a heavy police presence around the facility on Ga. Hwy. 316 outside of Lawrenceville.

No deputies were injured. The suspected shooter was taken to the hospital for treatment. His condition is unknown.

Sheriff Keybo Taylor said the suspect, known to law enforcement, was behaving “erratically” before entering the jail building.

“We want to reassure the community that the situation is under control and there is no ongoing threat to the public’s safety,” the Gwinnett County Sheriff’s Office said.

All traffic to the prison has been redirected and it is not currently accepting any new inmates, social media said.

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) said the sheriff’s office asked it to investigate an officer-involved shooting at the jail.
