Tarik Skubal delivered one of the Detroit Tigers’ most dominant postseasons ever

Tarik Skubal delivered one of the most dominant postseason performances by a Detroit Tigers pitcher.

The left-hander struck out eight Guardians in seven innings in Game 2 of the ALDS in Cleveland on Monday. This was followed by a Wild Card Series start in Game 1, where he struck out six Astros in Houston in six innings.

Those 14 strikeouts tied him for third in franchise history for hitting a Tiger in his first two postseason starts, along with right-hander Joe Coleman in the 1972 ALCS against Oakland, although Coleman only struck out in one game was used.

Ahead of them is right-hander Bill Donovan, who had 16 strikeouts in his first two appearances in the 1907 World Series against the Chicago Cubs. Donovan allowed nine runs – three earned – over 21 innings, including a 12-inning start in a 3-3 tie in Game 1 (it was dark in Chicago).

Left-hander Mickey Lolich – also No. 29 – took the top spot with 17 strikeouts in his first two starts of the 1968 World Series against the St. Louis Cardinals. The big lefty gave up four runs over 18 innings, all earned. Lolich, of course, is best known for his third start of the series, in which he singled out St. Louis ace Bob Gibson and allowed one run over nine innings in his third complete game of the series as the Tigers pulled away from a 3- 1 behind to capture the crown.

Monday’s performance showed a “game score” (a metric developed 40 years ago by sabermetrics godfather Bill James) of 79 from Skubal, which is in a tie for 12th all-time among Tigers pitchers (with two Justin Verlander starts in the 2013 playoffs). Unfortunately for Skubal (who had a lot of fun with the Cleveland crowd on Monday), the Tigers were also intrigued by Guardians left-hander Matthew Boyd and the Cleveland bullpen, and he left without a decision (thanks to a controversial two-out call at the top). of the eighth inning).

Verlander owns the best two game scores, with an 89 for his start in Game 5 of the 2012 ALDS, in which he allowed four hits and a walk with 11 strikeouts in a complete game shutout, and an 87 for his eight-inning start Game 5 of the 2013 ALDS, with two hits allowed, one walk and 10 strikeouts. Both starts came on the road against Oakland.

The list then jumps back 90 years to Schoolboy Rowe’s start in World Series Game 2 in 1934 against the St. Louis Cardinals, in which the Arkansas native (full name: Lynwood Thomas Rowe) scattered seven hits and had seven strikeouts while allowed two runs in a 12-inning complete game.
