Siesta Key residents continue their cleanup efforts as they worry about rainfall and vandalism

Siesta Key, Fla. (WWSB) – While many homeowners continued their cleanup efforts over the weekend, they are also keeping an eye on a week of potentially heavy rain and storms in the coming days.

Several streets near Siesta Key were lined with household items, art and even appliances that were no match for the wrath of Hurricane Helene last week.

Many are also vigilant and cautious given reports of suspicious people and incidents in the days following the storm. Evan Keats, community affairs director for the Sarasota County Sheriff’s Office, confirmed to ABC 7 that her office investigated two residential burglary calls where at least two people were arrested.

Keats added that the calls came out of concern for the safety of unoccupied homes. “People are at risk because their homes are open, and we understand that and are emphasizing on social media that we will have a strong presence out there, and we can also fly and see a lot of it from the air, and we.” We can control this while patrolling throughout the night. So don’t mess around, we have our hands full,” said Sarasota County Sheriff Kurt Hoffman.

While neighbors continued to work to help each other Saturday, they also took first responders’ precautions seriously. “The guy we’re staying with right now has a lot of guns, he’s not too worried about it, but we kind of look out for our neighbors and vice versa,” added Sarasota resident Phil Demirza.
