Star New England Patriots safety Jabrill Peppers is accused of strangling and throwing a woman down the stairs in his apartment early Saturday morning during a fight that was sparked by a phone call, according to court records.

Peppers, 29, is charged with assault with a dangerous weapon, strangulation or suffocation, possession of a Class B drug (cocaine) and assault on a family or household member.

After his arraignment Monday morning in Quincy District Court, he was released on $2,500 bail and ordered to stay away from the woman and have no contact with her. Peppers pleaded not guilty.

In his police report filed in court, Officer William Miranda wrote that he was called to Peppers’ Braintree apartment at about 4:15 a.m. for a reported domestic dispute.

The caller told police that a man living in the apartment – later identified as Peppers – hit her, choked her, took her clothes off and took her outside. She said she was choked six times but did not lose consciousness.

When Miranda arrived, he found the woman sitting barefoot on the front steps of the unit with her hand covering her face. She told Miranda: “(Peppers) put his hand on my neck and hit my head against the wall. He then pushed me down the stairs and as a result I suffered these injuries,” he wrote.

According to the report, the woman had scratches on her kneecaps and her forehead was visibly red. She told police Peppers was in the apartment and was not armed.

While police spoke to the woman outside, Peppers answered the door shirtless and holding a jacket. He told police, “I know what’s going on,” Miranda wrote.

Police handcuffed Peppers and took him to the police station to arrest him.

The woman told police that she and Peppers were having sex when someone called her, which upset Peppers, who told her to leave his apartment and go home.

According to the report, Peppers then pushed her out of the bedroom while they were both naked. The woman told police Peppers placed his hands on her neck and pushed her head against the wall.

According to the report, Peppers hit her head against the wall while holding on to her neck. The woman told police she was scared during the incident because Peppers “was crazy and had a serious expression on his face,” Miranda wrote.

After slamming her against the wall, Peppers pushed the woman down the stairs and slammed her cellphone and bag, the report said. The woman refused medical attention and was given an ice pack.

She declined to seek a restraining order against Peppers.

When Peppers arrived at the police station, officers found a plastic bag containing a white substance in his wallet, according to the report. Peppers admitted to possessing cocaine, police wrote. The substance tested positive for cocaine.

During an interview with police, Peppers told officers the argument stemmed from an argument about sex, that the woman was behaving “erratically” and refused to leave when asked.

Peppers told police the woman “fell on the stairs herself because she was drunk.” He claimed the woman made up the story that he threw her down the stairs to ruin his career.

“(Peppers) states that he attempted to defuse the situation and never placed his hands on (the woman),” the report states. “(Peppers) stated that he should have called the police, but he tried to send her home and did not attack her.”

Miranda wrote that he “did not notice” the odor of alcohol coming from the woman, nor did he notice that she spoke sloppily or was unsteady while walking. Her eyes were red, but Miranda wrote that he couldn’t determine whether it was from the alcohol or from crying.

During the arraignment, Peppers’ attorney Marc Alan Brofsky said evidence “cast real doubt on the allegations, including video footage.”

Peppers’ case will be heard on November 22, but Judge Mark Coven waived his appearance.

Peppers has been with the Patriots as captain since 2019.
