Recap of Dallas’ win on Sunday night

play

The Dallas Cowboys earned a tough win against the Pittsburgh Steelers on Sunday night thanks to a clutch pass from Dak Prescott.

Prescott threw his second touchdown of the day with 20 seconds left to give the Cowboys a 20-17 victory. Prescott was responsible for three turnovers (two interceptions and one fumble), but saved the day with 352 yards and two touchdowns.

Running back Rico Dowdle also had 87 yards on 20 carries. Steelers quarterback Justin Fields went 15 of 27 for 131 yards and two passing touchdowns. He also had 27 yards rushing.

After the first half, it seemed like the Cowboys should have led by more than three. Prescott and Co. moved the ball well in the first two quarters and totaled 202 yards. Prescott was 15 of 20 for 188 passing yards, but the story that emerges from the first half is his fumbled and inexcusable interception that ended two promising possessions for Dallas.

Cowboys vs. Steelers

While Prescott and the Cowboys’ offense had three timeouts and needed a touchdown to take the lead, they drove down the field and scored a 15-play, 70-yard go-ahead drive. On fourth-and-goal from the four-yard line, Prescott found Jalen Tolbert, giving them a three-point lead in the final seconds of the game.

Aided by timely conversions on third and fourth downs and costly penalties by the Cowboys, the Steelers turned a 12-play, 63-yard drive into a touchdown from Fields to tight end Pat Freiermuth (17-13).

The Cowboys went three quarters without reaching the end zone, but on the second play of the fourth quarter they scored their first touchdown of the game and regained the lead. From Prescott to running back Rico Dowdle from 22 yards, Dallas completed a 16-play, 90-yard drive to take a 13-10 lead.

The Steelers started the second half on a footballing note and came out of the game to take their first lead of the night. After quarterback Justin Fields took a serious hit that required a concussion evaluation, Pittsburgh continued to orchestrate a six-play, 72-yard drive that ended with Fields hitting tight end Connor Heyward for a 16-yard touchdown pass to score 10-6.

A sloppy half of football, in which Dak Prescott turned the football over in plus territory twice, goes into halftime with Dallas holding a narrow three-point lead. The Cowboys defense held up its end of the bargain by holding the Steelers to three points.

It was a defensive battle for both teams tonight with a notable few goals and big plays. However, the Cowboys pushed one second-quarter possession deep into Steelers territory before settling for a 33-yard field goal from Aubrey to take a 6-3 lead.

After watching the Cowboys make a methodical attempt to take the lead, the Steelers responded with three points of their own. Pittsburgh’s drive lasted 11 plays and 52 yards before kicker Chris Boswell hit the 41-yard field goal to tie the game.

It was clear that Dallas was trying to get the ball out quickly to neutralize TJ Watt and the rest of the Steelers’ pass rush and allow them to find an initial possession rhythm. Ultimately, the drive stalled and the Cowboys settled for a 55-yard field goal from Brandon Aubrey to take a 3-0 lead.

Cowboys vs Steelers Predictions

ESPN: Seven of ESPN’s 11 experts pick the Cowboys to make a splash in prime time. Despite injuries and the uncertainty surrounding Dallas, some believe they have enough talent to compete in Week 5’s game.

USA today: USA Today experts are less convinced that Dallas can overcome its challenges, as only two of the six picks went in the Cowboys’ favor.

Tony Catalina, Austin American-Statesman: Heading into Week 6, the Cowboys seem to have a lot going on. With so many serious injuries to contend with and a rocky start to the season, sentiment around Dallas isn’t particularly positive. However, the Cowboys find a way to rise to the challenge in the regular season when their backs are against the wall. Even though it may be ugly, Dallas finds a way to pull out a win on Sunday Night Football. 27-23.
