Dak Prescott saves Cowboys vs. Steelers with late heroics

PITTSBURGH – It was Dak Prescott’s game to win or lose.

Sure, it’s a team game. But no player was destined to have as much of an impact on Sunday night’s marathon game as the ailing Dallas Cowboys quarterback.

Late in the first quarter, Prescott was considered the 100th sack of TJ Watt’s career, and the milestone was him spitting out the football in the red zone.

Pooh.

Just before halftime, Prescott was intercepted at the goal line by Donte Jackson. It was some kind of misunderstanding. Prescott zigzagged. CeeDee Lamb zagged. Jackson chose.

Argh.

Some armchair quarterback somewhere must have grumbled about Prescott being the NFL’s first $60 million man.

In any case, early in the fourth quarter, Prescott threw the ball to Jalen Tolbert executing a deep post pattern. It was overthrown in such a way that it appeared Joey Porter Jr. was the intended receiver rather than the intended interception.

Once there is an accident. Twice is a coincidence. Three times is, as they say, a trend.

Prescott’s three turnovers made him the perfect gift for the Pittsburgh Steelers, who continue to rely on their big-play defense to cover the inconsistent offense.

But Prescott found his superhero cape in time. He shook off all the adversity of a memorable visit to Acrisure Stadium — including an hour-and-a-half weather delay before the opening game — and essentially led the Cowboys to a last-minute drive that sealed a 20-17 victory.

“Personally, I was obviously upset about the two minutes before halftime when I threw an interception there,” Prescott said of his attitude at the crunch time.

He settled for a four-and-goal from the 4-yard line with 20 seconds left in the fourth quarter. It was a precise throw to Tolbert in the short corner of the end zone that hit the ideal path out at the perfect time. But that may not have even been Prescott’s decisive play on the 15-play, 70-yard drive. The Cowboys (3-2) never would have had a chance at fourth-down drama if their undisputed leader hadn’t dove headfirst onto the turf two plays earlier to catch a Rico Dowdle fumble. The football was knocked out as the running back – who had a career-high 87 rushing yards – tried to jump over the pile from the one-yard line.

Instincts took over.

“They always make it a point to follow the ball,” Prescott said. “This is the reason for this more than ever. They’re just real-world examples that keep coming up.”

Prescott passed for 352 yards, which is the kind of big number you would associate with a quarterback who needs to test a team that was missing two strong players, Micah Parsons and DeMarcus Lawrence, on a beleaguered defense. He’s also missing a starting receiver as Brandin Cooks is expected to miss at least a month with a knee infection. And the running game was so suspect, so Dowdle’s big night and the fact that Dallas recorded 31 rushes gave some hope.

But Prescott, who completed 29 of 42 passes, wasn’t sure. He was nearly flawless on a 16-play, 90-yard drive that he capped with a 22-yard pass to Dowdle early in the fourth quarter, then came back on the next drive with a throw to the pickoff line. Wanted to bring Porter back. On the other hand, it is a team game. The Cowboys had the opportunity to short themselves out. The two red zone turnovers came on a night in which they committed 11 penalties for 87 yards.

But still, it was the kind of mess that called for a steady hand when it mattered most.

“He batted an eyelid,” Cowboys coach Mike McCarthy said, reflecting on the last drive. “He doesn’t worry about mistakes. There was no doubt we were going to go down and score.”

It couldn’t be easier. The Cowboys host the Detroit Lions next weekend, with a trip to San Francisco later in October. Nevertheless, they proved their mettle by emerging from a difficult environment with a win.

McCarthy called it a confidence builder. There is no doubt about that. But it was also a case where the team was hoping for Prescott’s composure to save the day.

“You’re just grateful,” he said, “especially in a game where I lost the ball, that I still had a chance and a chance and we were able to win the game.”

And so it was another hectic day at the office for Dak.
