PITTSBURGH – This back and forth game was tough. There were turnovers, blocked field goals and then of course the game-winning touchdown in the final seconds.

But here are a few plays that may have been forgotten but still had an impact on the outcome.

Run defense drops Harris – There has to be some plays here for the defense, which played outnumbered but recovered when needed. In the second quarter, the Steelers were on the move with a second-and-4 at the Dallas 43. Pittsburgh gave the ball to Najee Harris, who was stopped by Carlos Watkins and Tyrus Wheat for a 1-yard loss. And then, on third down, Justin Field missed a pass to George Pickens, forcing a punt. This stop in the running game ensured that the Steelers only had three points at halftime.

Dak’s long throw to Jalen Tolbert – After a third-and-4 at his own 21-yard line late in the first half, Dak found Jalen Tolbert, who sprinted down the left sideline for a 48-yard completion. That didn’t result in any points as Prescott threw an interception at the goal line. But the pass to Tolbert at least turned the field around and prevented the Steelers from scoring points before halftime.

Hold Turpin in route – first down – The Cowboys faced a fourth down near the Steelers 40 before a hold call on the Steelers gave them new life. KaVontae Turpin converted a penalty in the open field, giving the Cowboys a first down at the 33. From there, the offense came to life and scored its first touchdown on a pass to Rico Dowdle.

Ferguson converts late third down – On the game-winning drive, every play is a big success, but how about a third-and-9 conversion to tight end Jake Ferguson at the 22. The Cowboys had 10 yards on the play, extending the drive and avoiding a crucial fourth – Down game. Ferguson was strong on the flats all night, and on this play he found a way to get just enough to move the bats.

Call for timeouts before the last game – Jalen Tolbert was Dak’s intended receiver before the game-winning touchdown, but the ball went to him in a single bounce. Tolbert slipped to the ground and got up with an apparent groin injury. Tolbert would have a hard time mastering the route on the next play, but both the Cowboys and Steelers called a timeout before the fourth play. This not only qualified Tolbert to return to the game, but also gave him enough time to catch his breath. That was all he needed to score Dak’s game-winning play.
