Monday, Oct. 7, is the deadline in Texas to register to vote in order to participate in the 2024 general election, where voters will cast their ballots on everything from the presidential race between Vice President Kamala Harris and former President Donald Trump to members of Congress, the Texas Legislature and other elected offices at the state and local levels.

Texas is one of the few states with a voter registration deadline 30 days before the election. Here’s what you need to know about checking your status and registering to vote before the end of the day on Monday.

How do I check if I’m registered to vote?

You can check to see if you are registered and confirm your information by visiting the Texas Secretary of State’s website.

To register you need one of the following three combinations:

• Your Texas driver’s license number and date of birth.
• Your first and last name, your date of birth and your country of residence.
• Your date of birth and the unique voter identification number provided on your voter registration certificate.

Who can register to vote in Texas?

US citizens in Texas can register to vote if they are at least 18 years old or will be 18 years old on Election Day, November 5th.

Citizens of the state cannot register to vote if they have been legally convicted of a felony and are still serving a sentence, including probation or parole, or if they have been found mentally incompetent by a court. You can find more details about eligibility here.

Texas election law says state prison inmates who are appealing their convictions are eligible to register. However, the Secretary of State’s Office recommends consulting a lawyer first, as the timing of a final conviction can vary from case to case, according to KUT News. Read more here.

How do I register to vote?

There are several ways to submit a last-minute application on time:

• Visit the voter registration office in your county (find yours here)
• Register through a volunteer deputy voter registrar (organizations such as local chapters of the League of Women Voters often host voter registration events).
• Send the application by mail to the voter registrar in your county

If you choose to mail an application, it must be postmarked by the October 7th deadline in order to vote in the November 5th election. You can request the postmark through your local post office staff. Applications left in mailboxes or mailboxes may not always be postmarked on the same day.

You can find an application at county voter registration offices and some post offices, government offices or high schools. You can also print out the online application and send it to your county’s voter registrar. This requires an envelope and postage like normal mail. Download your application here.

If your application is postmarked by October 7th, it will count towards the November 5th deadline, even if it is received later. To avoid problems, some local voter registrars recommend filling out or dropping off the application in person if you’re registering close to the deadline.

What if I moved?

You must reside in a Texas county by the voter registration deadline to vote in the upcoming election, unless you qualify to vote by mail. Further information about postal voting and postal voting can be found here.

College students who are registered to live in Texas, such as their parents’ home, but are studying outside the state can request an absentee ballot. The deadline for receiving absentee ballot applications in a county is October 25th. Further information about postal voting can be found here. Eligible voters who are experiencing homelessness may vote as long as they provide an address and a description of their place of residence when registering. If necessary, the mailing address can be different, but a PO box address cannot be listed as a home address.

Monday is also the last day to file a change of address for the midterm elections. You can report a change of address or name online. You should do this if you have moved since your last election, especially if you moved to a different county or political subdivision or legally adopted a different name.

What do I do if I have problems with my voter registration?

If a county suspects that you have changed your address but your registration has not been updated, you may be placed on a “suspension list.” Voters who are on the pending list can still vote if they update or confirm their address before the voter registration deadline for an election or complete a “declaration of residence” when voting, but they may be required to vote at their previous polling place or a limited vote Voting.

Restricted ballots are only available during early voting at a “main early voting polling location,” which is typically the office of the election administrator or county clerk that conducts the election in your county. The primary early voting location should be listed on a county’s list of early voting locations.

While the state conducts voter roll reviews to remove what officials suspect are ineligible voter registrations, federal law prohibits the state from removing registered voters within 90 days of a federal election unless the voter has died convicted of a crime or declared mentally incompetent.
