Las Vegas Raiders lose third game due to their own mistakes

For most of the first quarter and a half, the Las Vegas Raiders controlled the pace of their Week 5 game against the Denver Broncos. Until one move changed the course of the entire game.

Las Vegas blew an early 10-0 lead, ultimately losing 34-18 and allowing Denver to end an eight-game losing streak against the Silver and Black.

The Raiders’ offense proved potent, scoring in just four plays, the last being a 57-yard touchdown by rookie tight end Brock Bowers, the first of his NFL career.

The defense capitalized on the successful first drive, limiting Denver’s offense to seven plays and forcing the home team to punt.

Las Vegas continued to thrive on offense as quarterback Gardner Minshew II distributed the ball to wide receivers Jakobi Meyers and Tre Tucker and running back Alexander Mattison for big gains. The Raiders had to settle for a 40-yard field goal attempt made by kicker Daniel Carlson to give Las Vegas an early 10-0 lead.

Denver finally tied it with a field goal on its next possession, but the Raiders’ offense kept rolling — until it failed.

A quick 40-yard run by Raiders running back Ameer Abdullah brought Las Vegas into enemy territory after just one play. The Raiders continued marching and got to the Denver 5-yard line.

On a play where Minshew could have easily found a wide-open Bowers, he threw it over the rookie tight end and into the hands of Broncos cornerback Patrick Surtain II, who took it all the way to the opponent’s end zone, tying the contest at 10 equaled points per piece.

The rest of the half was a defensive battle as the Raiders punted three times while Denver punted twice. Only in the last seconds of the half did one team manage to take the lead.

The Broncos made a 44-yard field goal, once again scoring points they shouldn’t have when a costly 15-yard penalty by Raiders defensive end Janarius Robinson resulted in an initially missed 59-yard attempt turned into a 3-point lead for Denver heading into the locker room.

Las Vegas committed five penalties in the first half.

The Raiders defense came out in force early in the second half, forcing a three-pointer capped by a sack by Crosby, his second of the game.

Unfortunately for the offense, this was unsuccessful as the Raiders were dominated up front and were forced to punt after six plays.

Denver’s offense performed well on the next drive as the unit marched to its first offensive touchdown of the game. It only lasted six games.

The Raiders would suffer two possession losses.

Given the opportunity to answer, Minshew threw his second pick of the contest, which would end his time under center in this Week 5 contest.

Luckily for the Raiders, the Broncos offense couldn’t take advantage this time and had to kick the ball back to Las Vegas.

On the next drive, quarterback Aidan O’Connell took over for Minshew, but there was no immediate change as Denver forced a three-and-out.

Denver answered this time, finding the end zone to cap an eight-play, 58-yard drive that gave the Broncos a comfortable 27-10 lead.

On the first play of the Raiders’ next possession, O’Connell threw a pass intended for Bowers, but it tipped into the air and was knocked down by Surtain, his second pick of the day.

O’Connell responded admirably on the offense’s next drive, throwing for 69 yards with passes to Meyers, DJ Turner and Tucker and a 4-yard completion to Bowers to open the drive.

The drive ended with a 3-yard rushing touchdown by Abdullah. The Raiders went to the 2 and ran the ball with a run by Mattison.

That ended the scoring for both teams, as Denver would walk away victorious for the first time since 2019 in this rivalry.

The Raiders fall to 2-3. They return home next Sunday for a game against the Pittsburgh Steelers.
