Tim Walz outsmarts Fox News host while discussing abortion

Tim Walz deftly handled Fox News’s Shannon Breams criticism of abortion rights during his appearance on Sunday, calling her attempts to steer the conversation toward whether there would be limits on how late the procedure would be allowed a “distraction.”

In his first one-on-one interview since being named the Democratic vice presidential nominee, Walz keeps a cool head and fends off tough questions.

“I made myself clear. We demand the restoration of Roe vs. Wade,” Walz said when Bream urged him to move on Fox News Sunday whether Democrats would allow abortions during all nine months of pregnancy.

“The law is very clear. Nothing changes about that. That was refuted every time.”

Bream weighed in, claiming that when he enshrined abortion rights and reproductive health care in Minnesota law last year, the legislation did not impose a “single limit up to the ninth month of pregnancy.”

Walz, however, calmly continued his message, continuing, “That leaves the decision to be made by the woman and her health care providers.”

“The situation we find ourselves in is that healthcare providers are not able to provide this. What that does is put you in a situation in Texas where they’re afraid to do what’s necessary,” he said.

“That doesn’t change anything. This puts the decision back up to the woman and the doctors and we know this simply needs to be raised,” he added.

As further pressure was placed on abortion laws in Minnesota, the governor fought back.

“It distracts from the real problem: Women are being forced to miscarry, women are being forced to return home, get sepsis and possibly die.”

“This is why maternal mortality rates in Texas have skyrocketed. This is bad policy.”

Walz also repeated his claim that Trump would go further by signing a “total nationwide ban.” Questions have been raised about the extent to which Trump could implement the policies outlined in Project 2025, but the Republican presidential candidate has said he would veto such a ban.

“Do you call that a complete lie?” asked Bream Walz.

“Yes, of course. And Senator Vance has said that in the past,” Walz replied.

He also accused Vance and Trump of making the issue political.

“Look, they may see this as an election issue. We see it as a woman’s right to make her own physical decisions. That’s what the states, like my state, have the ability to do.”

“Let’s be clear: The American public is not interested in cutting hair on this issue.”
