Our observations at halftime between the Jacksonville Jaguars and the Indianapolis Colts

The Jacksonville Jaguars lead the Indianapolis Colts 13-10 at halftime at EverBank Stadium.

So what did we see at halftime between the Jaguars and Colts? We explain it below.

Travis Etienne is the focus today

It’s clear what strategy the Jaguars are using against Gus Bradley’s zone-heavy defense. The Jaguars call up deeper, long developing routes at high speed, but also incorporate plenty of underlying routes that Lawrence can hit for easy yards. And so far, running back Travis Etienne has been the biggest contributor to those plays.

Etienne had three catches for 39 yards in the first quarter alone, with the Jaguars’ offense taking advantage of his ability to break tackles and get yards after the catch. Trevor Lawrence seems completely in tune with the game plan and Etienne looks to be the focal point going forward.

Doug Pederson got too bold on the fourth-down call

As the Jaguars moved into Colts territory on their first drive of the game, Doug Pederson got too bold on a fourth-and-short call. Trevor Lawrence missed an open Gabe Davis on third down and instead threw to a covered Brenton Strange, who didn’t get the yards needed for a conversion. The Jaguars then had to make a decision: either get the points or try to keep the drive alive.

With the Jaguars facing a 4th-and-2 from the Colts’ 26-yard line, Pederson opted for a low-percentage slant play to Brian Thomas Jr. on fourth down rather than a gimmie field one. Goal. For a Jaguars offense that has struggled to score points all year, Pederson should have gotten the points against a struggling Colts team.

Pederson opted for a 4th-and-2 field goal at the goal line later in the half, showing a lack of consistency in the game.

The Jaguars’ defense is torn apart in another slow start

For the fourth week in a row, the Jacksonville Jaguars defense was completely asleep at the start of the game.

After letting Deshaun Watson, Josh Allen and CJ Stroud tear through the secondary for a touchdown drive early in the game, the Jaguars once again found themselves on the wrong side of an aerial attack in Week 5.

Joe Flacco went 75 yards on the first drive to lead the Jaguars 7-7 and ended the game with a touchdown pass to Michael Pittman Jr. that put the Jaguars in an early 7-0 hole.

Everyone knew how the Colts passing game would attack the Jaguars a certain way under Flacco, but the Jaguars did nothing to stop it. ‘
