Airplane pullout: Teams of people pull a 48-ton United Airlines 737 at O’Hare to benefit Special Olympics Illinois

CHICAGO (WLS) – More than 100 teams were at O’Hare Airport Saturday morning to pull 48-ton United Airlines planes a few feet.

The key to success? Just wing it.

“It’s definitely not easy. You have to dig deep and get started right away. It’s a cool experience,” Algonquin Police Chief Dennis Walker said.

The 16th Annual Plane Pull Competition benefiting Special Olympics Illinois was held Saturday. Hosted by the Illinois Law Enforcement Torch Run, United Airlines and the City of Chicago.

“If you’re not very excited here, then something’s wrong. There’s just so much passion and atmosphere and I love it,” said Kathy Schniedwind, Special Olympics Illinois board chair.

Teams of 20 set out to pull a 95,000-pound aircraft 12 feet as quickly as possible in hopes of raising fundraising goals to a new level – $200,000, to be exact.

It requires brute strength, teamwork and just a little coordination.

Emmerson Hjort of Special Olympics Illinois helps organize the Plane Pull.

She said it was worth all the work to see the event take off.

“It makes me so happy. My heart is so happy to see everyone coming together, working so hard and having fun,” Hjort said.

Emmerson’s mother, Kathleen Williams, couldn’t be prouder of her daughter.

“It’s all her. She’s kind of the person who wants to come in there and take on challenges herself and try new things,” Williams said.

A man versus machine test pays off for the Special Olympics Illinois.
