At 5 p.m., maximum sustained winds were about 40 mph with stronger gusts.

Rapid strengthening is forecast for the next few days. Milton is expected to become a hurricane by early Monday. The system could develop into a major hurricane as it moves over the central and eastern Gulf of Mexico.

Areas of heavy rainfall will also impact portions of Florida well ahead of the tropical system on Sunday and Monday, with heavy rainfall more directly related to the system expected Tuesday through Wednesday. This rainfall poses a risk of flash flooding, urban and territorial flooding, and minor to isolated moderate river flooding, the NHC said.
