Rutgers Football vs. Nebraska: Game updates, live score

play

Rutgers football had opportunities.

Lots of them.

But the Scarlet Knights couldn’t capitalize nearly enough.

After struggling on offense for most of the game, Rutgers finally found the end zone with about four minutes left, but ultimately failed to make the comeback and lost to Nebraska 14-7 at Memorial Stadium in Lincoln.

The loss dropped the Scarlet Knights to 4-1.

This is how the game developed:

The Scarlet Knights showed life late, but all the missed opportunities up to that point proved costly and resulted in their first loss of the season.

Well, how about this? Rutgers has a late life.

The Scarlet Knights scored when Athan Kaliakmanis threw an 11-yard touchdown pass to Ben Black.

It’s now 14-7 Nebraska.

Nebraska had a fourth-and-10 at its own 28 and a punt. But Jamier Wright-Collins flew in and blocked it. Shaquan Loyal recovered the ball and returned it to the Cornhuskers’ 2-yard line.

But Rutgers failed to get into the end zone. It almost succeeded on the first play of possession when Monangai tried to knock the ball in but was cleared inside the 1 – it was unreviewable and coaches can’t challenge it.

After a holding penalty by Nebraska in the second period, Rutgers had the first goal from the second period. That didn’t matter.

Rutgers couldn’t score.

The Scarlet Knights scored on a four-and-goal from the 2. Kaliakmanis was almost intercepted.

Instead of a touchdown, it was a turnover on downs.

Brutal first half for the Scarlet Knights.

Questionable decisions, costly turnovers, the ability to endure anything offensively. The Scarlet Knights reached Nebraska territory on all four possessions in the first half but escaped with no points.

Rutgers is clearly still in this game, but will need to play a much, much cleaner second half to give itself a chance.

An 11-yard run by Janiran Bonner makes it 14-0 for Nebraska.

The Cornhuskers began the possession at the Nebraska 28th line after Marques Buford Jr. tackled Athan Kaliakmanis at the Nebraska 24th line.

Rutgers really couldn’t find much success on either side of the ball today.

Dante Dowdell hits the ball from a yard out and the Cornhuskers take a 7-0 lead over Rutgers.

Rutgers had a fourth-and-4 at the Nebraska 25 and looked like it was going to attempt a Jai Patel field goal. But the Scarlet Knights faked it and defending champion Timmy Ward took advantage of the snap and tried to get a first down.

It didn’t fool Nebraska, which stopped Ward for no gain and a turnover on downs.

Rutgers is a seven-point underdog, according to Action Network as of October 4.

O/U: Over 40.5 (-111), Below 40.5 (-109)

Money line: Nebraska -262, Rutgers +210

Forecast: I think this will be another relatively low-scoring and tricky game. But I think home-field advantage will help Nebraska and Dylan Raiola will make a big play late to lead the Cornhuskers narrowly past Rutgers. Nebraska 21, Rutgers 17.
