Heat wave: The Bay Area copes with October’s coastal sizzle and cools off as temperatures continue to be hot

SAN FRANCISCO (KGO) — As the Bay Area sizzles in this October heat wave, many people made a plan to stay cool. That meant heading to the coast for some beach time.

Two hundred runners braved the October heat Saturday in the women’s Headlands Half Marathon near Rodeo Beach in Marin County. Race officials said safety precautions were in place on the course.

“We have eight stations, so there is water, electrolytes and food halfway through,” said race director Helke Ramos.

Runner Patty Shijo was from Sacramento.

“It kind of worked to my advantage because I heard it was going to be warm here, which helped. It was 100 degrees in Sacramento,” Shijo said.

Down on Rodeo Beach, families pitched tents to beat the heat. It was a cool place if you could find parking. At 11 a.m. there were practically no seats left

“I think it’s the warmest weather ever. Normally we wear sweatshirts and hoodies down here,” said Ryan Buntain of Mill Valley.

It was extremely hot in the Marin Headlands. Some tourists touring the Golden Gate Bridge wondered: What happened to the fog?

“I was expecting cold weather. Now I wear my sweater to avoid getting sunburned. I expected it to be much cooler here today. We didn’t check the weather,” said Rachel Benoy, visiting from Virginia.

In San Francisco, temperatures on Ocean Beach were 90 degrees.

“It’s nice today. No jacket,” said Stephane Jiminez of San Francisco.

Jimenez and her dog Buster Nosey have come to the right place.

Surfers loved the hot weather, which made the Pacific seem almost warm.

“I spoke to my friend. We could try it without a wetsuit. The weather was fantastic,” said surfer Carlos Marin.

It’s not sweater weather yet. Warm temperatures are expected to continue on Sunday.
