Sources – Chiefs await clarity on Rashee Rice, eye trades for WRs

With the Chiefs expecting Rashee Rice to be out for an extended period of time, Kansas City is looking to make another move at wide receiver – just as it has in each of the last two years, league sources told ESPN on Saturday.

The Chiefs will first want to get doctors’ final determination on Rice’s status, which the league said could come as soon as Monday after he undergoes knee surgery.

League sources say there is still hope that Rice could return this season and be sidelined for six to eight weeks, but a decision won’t be made until early next week at the earliest. It’s hard to say how realistic it is that Rice could return this season, although the Chiefs haven’t given up hope on that possibility.

Once the Chiefs have clarity on Rice’s injury, they can act. Two years ago, the Chiefs acquired Kadarius Toney from the Giants before the trade deadline. Last year, they brought back Mecole Hardman in a trade with the Jets just before the deadline.

With Rice out indefinitely this year and Hollywood Brown out for the remainder of the regular season with a shoulder injury that required surgery, the Chiefs will explore all options to see if they can make another trade for a wide receiver.

The Chiefs explored signing DeAndre Hopkins in the 2023 offseason before he agreed to a two-year, $26 million contract with the Titans. With Hopkins now in the final year of his contract, the Titans may be tempted to consider offers for their veteran wide receiver.

The Chiefs could also approach the Jets if New York signs Davante Adams and see if New York would be interested in moving any of its other wide receivers, league sources said.

The Chiefs are not expected to be able to sign Adams for a variety of reasons. For starters, the Chiefs have just under $5 million in available cap space and would need the Raiders’ help to pay back a portion of Adams’ base salary this season. But the Raiders won’t be doing their longtime division rival any favors, financial or otherwise.

Adams also may not be excited about playing in Kansas City, where he was accused of assault for shoving a qualified media member after a game in October 2022. Adams had pushed the man, identified by police as Ryan Zebley, who worked as a freelance photographer for ESPN. The misdemeanor charge was later dropped.

It also wouldn’t be easy for Adams – or any other receiver – to take over the Chiefs’ offense in the middle of the season after not working with Patrick Mahomes.

The Chiefs placed Rice on injured reserve on Thursday, sidelining him for at least the next four games. He suffered the injury last Sunday when Mahomes collided with his knee as teammates were chasing a Chargers fumble that followed an interception.

Rice leads the Chiefs with 24 receptions and 288 yards in four games this season. He is also tied for the team lead with two touchdown receptions.
