TSU football rebounds again to beat Lindenwood in Big South/OVC play

For the second straight year, Tennessee State football rallied in the fourth quarter to secure a Big South/Ohio Valley Conference win on Saturday as the Tigers visited Lindenwood.

And for the second week in a row, it was the defense that helped TSU to a 24-20 win and stay right in the middle of the conference race. It was another example of the resilience coach Eddie George said his team has shown since the start of the conference schedule.

“Resilience is at the heart of our work,” said George. “It’s really embedded in our foundation at this point. We had some difficult games like this last year, but this group showed something different. It’s like they crossed a threshold because they thought they could win games like this. Now we have managed to build on that trust.”

Last week, TSU came from behind to beat Charleston Southern 13-9 with a touchdown with 46 seconds left.

The defense once again led the way for Tennessee State

The Tigers (4-2, 2-1) defense, which had not allowed a touchdown in seven straight quarters entering the game, shut down the Lindenwood (2-4, 1-1) offense in the second half after the Lions took a 20-7 lead at halftime.

TSU forced Lindenwood to punt on its first four possessions of the second half. After TSU missed its fourth possession, the Lions thwarted the putback in their own territory. TSU then marched to the Lindenwood 1-yard line, where backup quarterback Tevin Carter ran for his second touchdown, giving the Tigers their only lead with 7:21 remaining.

“We still have a lot of work to do,” said George. “Of course you don’t want to make it that difficult. But you have to win games like this to build up the courage to win the championship. That’s what we do.”

Former Pearl Cohn star Boogie Trotter secures TSU win

Tennessee State defensive back Boogie Trotter secured the Tigers victory when he recovered a fumble with 56 seconds left. It was the third straight week the former Pearl Cohn star posted a turnover.

Trotter grabbed the ball that Lindenwood quarterback Nate Glantz fumbled at the Lions’ 31. Glantz tried to get a first down on second-and-long.

The TSU offensive was then able to prevail until the end of time.

Trotter had also stopped Lindenwood on its previous possession when he defended a pass thrown to Jeff Caldwell at midfield.

Against Charleston Southern last week, Trotter had a fumble recovery and against Tennessee Tech the week before, he had an interception, a forced fumble and a fumble.

“Boogie played some really good ball,” George said. “He gets the balls out. He studies the opponent brilliantly every week so he knows what he is doing. (Defensive coach) (Richard) McNutt and (defensive coordinator) Brandon Fisher have done a really good job with the secondary. “I prepare it every week.

Trotter helped TSU hold Lindenwood to just 99 yards on 11 possessions.

Tennessee State had its worst start to the season

Tennessee State had its worst start to the season. Even worse than the 52-3 loss to North Dakota State on September 7th.

After TSU’s offense went three-and-out, Lindenwood racked up 36 yards on two runs before Caldwell made a 34-yard touchdown catch just 1:56 into the game. Caldwell leads the FCS in touchdown catches.

On TSU’s first offensive play after Hall’s touchdown, defensive end Frank Caldwell intercepted a deflected pass from Draylen Ellis and ran 15 yards into the end zone. This result came just 1:15 minutes after Lindenwood’s first goal.

TSU stopped the bleeding on its next possession when Ellis went on a 10-play, 75-yard scoring drive. It included a 19-yard pass to Karate Brenson and was capped by Carter’s first touchdown run from three yards. Carter, a transfer from Memphis who is 6-foot-2 and weighs 220 pounds, comes into play in goal-line situations.
