The No. 3 ranked Ohio State Buckeyes face Iowa in what is expected to be the Buckeyes’ toughest test of the season so far.

Although Ohio State is in charge after both teams’ openers, leading 7-0 at Ohio Stadium.

Iowa, at 3-1 with a bye week, has a top-20 defense nationally in points (13.75) and yards allowed (272.8) per game. According to ESPN’s advanced SP+ stats, Iowa has the best defense in the country.

From 2018 to 2023, Iowa held opponents to 4.4 yards per play. This is the lowest number of any major university program.

Ohio State is by far the best offense Iowa has ever experienced. The Hawkeyes’ defense faltered in the second half of their 20-19 loss to Iowa State on Sept. 7. In the last game, Iowa held Minnesota scoreless in the second half of the Hawkeyes’ 31-14 win.

“I think it will be the best-coached defense we will face all season,” Ohio State offensive coordinator Chip Kelly said. “If you’re a real footballer, it’s a challenge you look forward to.”

When play resumes, Iowa will have the ball at the OSU 40 with a first down.

3:41, first quarter: Will Howard capped a 14-play, 88-yard, 7:46 drive with a 14-yard touchdown pass to Emeka Egbuka.

Wide receiver Bryson Rodgers, who is expected to see more playing time today as Carnell Tate appears to be limited due to injury, made an impressive first-down grab between two defenders on this drive.

As we’ve seen in several games this year, the OSU coaches let Howard get into a rhythm with some short passes, and Howard is 6 for 6 for 46 yards.

11:17, first quarter: The Buckeyes’ defense allowed a first down before forcing a punt that cornered OSU deep. Hawkeyes tight end Luke Lachey, son of OSU All-American Jim Lachey, has one catch for -1 yard. He prevented quarterback Cade McNamara from suffering a major loss by intercepting the signal-caller’s sidearm throw.

OSU’s Jayden Fielding will kickoff against Iowa, while Ohio State defers its pick to the second half after winning today’s coin toss.

Ohio State is honoring its 2024 Hall of Fame inductees today. That includes former Buckeyes quarterback Braxton Miller, seen here before reuniting with DeVier Posey and Etienne Sabino.

The Indianapolis Colts sent three representatives to Ohio State vs. Iowa on Saturday. The Miami Dolphins, San Francisco 49ers and Pittsburgh Steelers have two participants. One of them was the Arizona Cardinals, the Detroit Lions, the Cleveland Browns, the New York Giants and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Ohio State starting defensive tackle Tyleik Williams is expected to return Saturday against Iowa.

Williams was medically cleared to play at Michigan State last week after being unavailable for the Sept. 21 game against Marshall due to an undisclosed injury, but the Buckeyes kept him out of the Big Ten opener to give him more time to get back to full strength to return.

Day said Williams’ availability is limited to an emergency situation. He had been in uniform against the Spartans and had practiced last week.

In non-conference wins over Akron and Western Michigan earlier in the season, Williams totaled nine tackles and 1.5 sacks.

  • Spread: Ohio State -19.5
  • Over/Under: 45.5 points

Ohio State 34, Iowa 13: Bill Rabinowitz of The Columbus Dispatch says: “Finally a game with a real challenge. The Hawkeyes’ defense will force Ohio State to be patient. Nothing is easy against Iowa. But while the Hawkeyes’ offense has improved over the poor unit it has had in the past, he hasn’t been strong enough to upset the Buckeyes for years, unless dangerous running back Kaleb Johnson is good enough to stop him.

Ohio State 31, Iowa 13: Joey Kaufman of The Columbus Dispatch says: “Iowa has actually improved on offense, a combination of Tim Lester replacing Brian Ferentz as coordinator and Kaleb Johnson emerging as a breakout star in the backfield. The Hawkeyes are averaging 32 points per game, the most since 2002. However, the progress in their passing game hasn’t been as dramatic and it’s ultimately unlikely that they’ll be able to get a slugfest with the Buckeyes, who are averaging nearly 50 points per game, with a new player in the game in Chip Kelly.

Ohio State 31, Iowa 7: Rob Oller of The Columbus Dispatch says: “Ohio State continues to climb the increasingly challenging schedule ladder, from softball Akron, Western Michigan and Marshall to fast-pitch Michigan State. Iowa presents its toughest challenge yet as the Hawkeyes’ defense ranks 15th nationally in points allowed per game (13.8). But the Buckeyes are No. 1 in that category (6.8). So unless Iowa finds a magic potion to score more points — and it won’t — things will go more smoothly for OSU. “

Ohio State 27, Iowa 10: Tyler Tachman of the Des Moines Register says: “Iowa hasn’t beaten any of the traditional Big Ten powers — Ohio State, Penn State or Michigan — since a win over the Nittany Lions in 2021, and it’s hard to imagine that trend continuing .” An end in Columbus on Saturday. The Hawkeyes are starting one of the best rushers in the country, Kaleb Johnson, but have enough questions elsewhere, including a spotty passing game and an unusually flawed secondary, to make the Buckeyes an uphill climb.
