(This story has been updated to add new information.)

It won’t affect your chances of watching the 2024 Detroit Tigers postseason, but the future TV home of the 2025 Tigers could change.

In a status conference in federal bankruptcy court on Wednesday, Diamond Sports Group, the parent company of Bally Sports, which televises the Tigers in Detroit, said it plans to continue a broadcast partnership with an MLB team, the Atlanta Braves.

According to Evan Drellich of The Athletic, Diamond has terminated his contract with two of the eight teams he is renegotiating with, the Tigers and Tampa Bay Rays, who will either have to renegotiate a new contract or find a new broadcast home. The other teams couldn’t be dropped today and were renegotiating with Diamond, according to the report.

According to the report, MLB was unaware of this and is actively fighting the case in court. It is unclear at this point whether Diamond will be able to give up the rest of its broadcast packages or not.

In August, Diamond inked a new contract to be with the Detroit Red Wings and Detroit Pistons through the 2024–25 season. The Tigers already had a deal to broadcast on Bally Sports Detroit 2025 before Wednesday’s developments potentially upended that. The Tigers broadcasters, led by play-by-play broadcaster Jason Benetti, are not expected to be affected because their contracts are directly with the team.

The network was dropped from Xfinity cable packages for three months of the 2024 MLB season due to a carriage dispute, but reached a deal with Xfinity (owned by Comcast) in late July. The Tigers returned to Xfinity starting in August, just in time for a dramatic playoff push.

ABOUT THE REAL DIAMOND: The Detroit Tigers’ win in Game 1 is a building block for the future – just like today

Diamond, a subsidiary of Sinclair Broadcast Group that operated the regional sports networks under the Bally brand, filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in March 2023. In the spring, four MLB teams were ordered to pay 50% of the unpaid media rights fees they were owed. Because Diamond is filing for bankruptcy, the Company may accept and reject certain contracts as part of this process.
