Before the game

Syracuse has four players at UNLV, but not dressed. They are Marlowe Wax, Malachi James, Will Nixon and Marcellus Barnes. Syracuse coach Fran Brown had already ruled out Yazeed Haynes.

UNLV (4-0, 1-0 Mountain West) is ranked 25th in the country and has several wins over Power Four teams. The Rebels beat Kansas and Houston. This and their undefeated record make them considered a College Football Playoff team in some areas. The Rebels would make it as the top-ranked Group of Five team in these predictions.

A loss to Syracuse (3-1, 1-1 ACC) would likely scupper those plans. The Orange is looking to win multiple regular-season games against teams ranked in the AP Top 25 for the first time since 2001. Syracuse did beat two ranked teams in 2018, but one of them was West Virginia in the Camping World Bowl.

The Rebels have won their four games by an average of 31.5 points. They rank sixth nationally in rushing, averaging 283 yards per game in an offense that features a lot of triple-option principles. They are also not allergic to throwing the ball and average 147 yards per game.

This will be UNLV’s second game without starting quarterback Matthew Sluka, who left the program due to a no-play dispute. His absence wasn’t a problem last week as Campbell transfer Hajj-Malik Williams looked just as capable, if not better. Williams left Campbell with the program’s career passing record, throwing for 8,236 yards in five seasons.

The teams were able to throw the Rebels reasonably well (226 yards per game), but UNLV was able to make up for it with nine interceptions, tied for the second-most in the country.

Safety Jalen Catelon has four of them, making him the most in the country. He will be someone SU quarterback Kyle McCord will likely want to avoid.

Catelon thrived for three seasons at Arkansas under defensive coordinator Barry Odom, now UNLV’s head coach. During his time with the Razorbacks, Catelon was named a two-time preseason All-American by Phil Steele. He transferred to Texas last season and didn’t have the same success, resulting in a move to UNLV and a reunion with Odom.
