Just six days after an extremely tough test against No. 3 Ohio State, Michigan State football has no time to breathe as the Spartans return to the starting lineup to face No. 6 Oregon on the road.

The Spartans are feeling the full wrath of the new Big Ten, facing two likely College Football Playoff teams within days of each other. But there are no excuses in college football, and Jonathan Smith will look to help his team bounce back against a team he knows very well.

Smith, who is in his first year at Michigan State, played against the Ducks in all six seasons he was head coach at rival Oregon State and was also the Beavers’ starting quarterback during his playing days, so Autzen Stadium is a Place he knows very well. As head coach of the Beavers, Smith was 2-4 against the Ducks, with both wins coming at home.

In addition to the familiarity Smith and his staff have with the Ducks, another thing the Spartans have working for them is the return of some key players to the lineup. Wide receiver Jaron Glover looked good in his return against the Buckeyes after missing two games and should be ready to face the Ducks, while breakout rookie receiver Nick Marsh is no longer listed on the injury report after only sporadic appearances Operations should play a bigger role against OSU.

Left tackle Stanton Ramil will also be back in the Spartans’ lineup, while on the defensive side of the ball the Spartans have avoided long-term injuries with defensive tackle Maverick Hansen, safety Malik Spencer and nickel back Angelo Grose all injured against the Buckeyes.

Just like last week, the Spartans are big underdogs against the Ducks, with oddsmakers calling Oregon the 23½-point favorite.

Michigan State vs. Oregon Prediction, Tips, Odds

Chris Solari, Detroit Free Press: Smith gets the Spartans going early, with Aidan Chiles providing early points and the defense keeping the Ducks from making big plays. But in the second half, Dillon Gabriel and Co. make adjustments that get the ball moving, and Oregon’s defense – with a big play from MSU transfer Derrick Harmon – wears down the depleted MSU offensive line, giving the Spartans a third loss in consequence. The choice: Oregon 31, Michigan State 17

  • Spread: Oregon at 23½
  • Over/Under Overall: 52½
  • Money line: Oregon -2500, MSU +1150
